Developed for low-power and cost-sensitive embedded or companion pico projector applications, Intersil Pico-qHDTM provides a fully integrated reference design that includes high-volume production of light engines, hardware, firmware and customizable design files. This low-cost system solution, using Micron's E330 compact 5.5 cm3 qHD light engine, can be easily integrated into a wide range of applications, including Micron's recently launched portable PoP VideoTM pico projector mobile device accessories. Built on a compact, inexpensive 1.7 x 2 inch printed circuit board, the Pico-qHDTM meets the low manufacturing cost requirements of applications such as consumer cameras such as digital cameras, mobile phones, tablets, video players and other handheld products. Driven by these applications, Pacific Media Associates predicts that the annual sales of pico projectors will reach 58 million in 2015.

The platform is based on Intersil's new ISL97901, a fully integrated buck/boost RGGB-LED driver optimized for pico projector display applications. The ISL97901 offers industry-leading overall power efficiency, minimal solution footprint, and the ability to drive RGB or RGGB or RGBW LEDs. The ISL97901 maintains the highest image quality with precise current control. The 2.0 mA current accuracy provides a consistent white balance setting that achieves consistency throughout the life cycle of the production unit and the pico projector. Its electronic system can drive up to 1.5A of LED current, making it compatible with many high-power LEDs, providing more than 20 lumens of brightness for pico projectors.

In addition to the ISL97901 buck-boost LED driver, the LED LCoS pico projector reference design integrates a wide range of Intersil products, including the TW8835 LCD video processor, the ISL9307 power management IC, the ISL9110 buck-boost converter, and the ISL9230 battery charger. And the ISL58333 OEIC sensor option for automatic real-time white balance control to maintain image quality and reduce light calibration costs.

Features • Optimized solution for field sequential LED LCoS pico projector systems
o Small 5.5cc light engine, 7 mm height, for applications with embedded projection • Compatible with up to 1080p input video, automatically downgraded to qHD (960x540) display resolution.
o HDMI input video interface provides compatibility with a wide range of HDMI video devices.
• Small electronic system footprint with low power requirements:
o Light engine power consumption is only 1W
o Total system (light engine + electronic system) power budget less than 2W
o Electronic system footprint for accessory applications is 1.7x 2 inches
o Deep embedded applications have an electronic system footprint of less than 1.5 x 1 inch.
• A video processor with an embedded MCU that provides an On-Screen Display (OSD) for standalone or embedded projector applications.
• The battery charger allows the pico projector to be used while charging, improving the user experience.
• No fan or active cooling, making it suitable for integration into small devices.
