WEF 2018 continues to focus on the Industrial Internet of Things
In 2018, the World Economic Forum (WEF) continued to emphasize the importance of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) as a central theme. During the closing press conference, it was highlighted that after numerous discussions and seminars, one key takeaway emerged: the human element remains crucial in navigating the rapid technological transformations brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In addition, the WEF announced plans to expand its Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which had been launched in San Francisco in March 2017, to multiple countries around the globe.
According to reports, new centers are set to open in India, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates. Other nations and organizations, including Bahrain, Denmark, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the United Kingdom, have also joined the initiative. Additionally, Deutsche Bank, Dubai Power and Water Authority, and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations are among the key partners supporting this global effort.
Klaus Schwab, founder and CEO of the WEF, emphasized during the opening of the first center that it would serve as a hub for global dialogue and collaboration on emerging technologies. The model of the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center aims to bring together business leaders, governments, startups, civil society, academics, and international organizations to co-develop governance solutions for technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain.
The WEF also announced the formation of several specialized committees, such as the Global Artificial Intelligence Council, the Global IoT Council, and the Global Blockchain Council. These committees will focus on identifying gaps in technology governance, facilitating knowledge sharing among policymakers, practitioners, and experts, and offering strategic guidance for the center’s initiatives. They will also act as early adopters of policies and protocols developed by the center.
To further support research and innovation, the WEF introduced an academic scholarship program, allowing top undergraduate students from leading universities to study at local centers. This two-year program enables researchers to spend the first year at the center and return to their original institutions in the second year, ensuring a seamless integration of academic research into the center's work.
The concept of Industry 4.0 was first introduced by the WEF in 2015, and the following year, Klaus Schwab published his influential book *The Fourth Industrial Revolution*, which has since become a cornerstone in understanding the impact of technological advancements on society and the economy.
