Low Power Wireless PIR Motion Detection Reference Design--TIDA-01476 Solution
TI's TIDA-01476 is a low-power wireless PIR motion detection reference design that enables the creation of industrial sensor-to-cloud nodes. This solution connects to IoT network gateways and cloud data providers, leveraging micro-power operational amplifiers, comparators, and Texas Instruments' SimpleLinkâ„¢ ultra-low-power sub-1 GHz wireless microcontroller (MCU) platform. The result is an ultra-low-power motion detector with long battery life and no need for wiring. It supports communication over distances up to 1,000 meters and complies with IEEE 802.15.4e/g standards, making it ideal for applications such as motion detection, lighting sensors, wireless control, and building automation.
This reference design showcases how to build an industrial sensor-to-cloud end node capable of connecting to IoT gateways and cloud platforms. By using TI’s nano-power op amps, comparators, and the SimpleLink™ ultra-low-power MCU, the system achieves extremely long battery life—up to 10 years from a single CR2032 coin cell. The design is optimized for energy efficiency, allowing the MCU to remain in deep sleep mode until motion is detected, at which point it wakes up to send data wirelessly.
The TIDA-01476 reference design includes a detailed block diagram, circuit schematics, bill of materials, and PCB layout, providing a complete starting point for developers. It features key components such as a PIR sensor, two nano-power op amps, two nano-power comparators, and an ultra-low-power wireless MCU. The two op amps amplify the PIR sensor signal, while the window comparator helps distinguish motion from background noise. Motion detection triggers the MCU to wake up and transmit data, minimizing power consumption during idle periods.
Some of the main features of TIDA-01476 include:
- Long-range connectivity up to 1 km (line of sight)
- IEEE 802.15.4e/g compliant sub-1 GHz wireless communication
- Ultra-low power consumption with a 10-year battery life
- Low standby current of 1.65 μA
- Interrupt-driven wireless communication for enhanced power savings
- Motion sensitivity up to 30 feet
Applications include motion detection systems, smart lighting, wireless control systems, and building automation solutions. The design guide provides valuable insights into component selection, system theory, software implementation, and testing procedures, helping engineers integrate TI’s nano-power analog components and SimpleLink™ MCU into their own projects.
