Beijing started the 5G network pilot work and became the first region to try 5G network
Beijing is set to kick off its 5G network testing this year, marking a significant step forward in the city's smart city development. The trials are already well-prepared, and with the national rollout expected in 2020, Beijing is likely to be the first region in China to implement commercial 5G services. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance digital infrastructure and improve public services through advanced technology.
According to recent reports from the Beijing Municipal Economic and Information Committee, the city will continue to push forward with smart city construction and expand information services for residents. Among these initiatives, 5G network development has become a key focus. Pilot trials are already underway, and the city is preparing for large-scale implementation in the near future.
The "Beijing Big Data and Cloud Computing Development Action Plan (2016–2020)" outlines ambitious goals, including full 4G coverage by 2020. Specific locations such as the Beijing City Sub-center, the 2019 Beijing Garden Expo Park, the new airport, and venues for the 2022 Winter Olympics will lead in 5G commercial demonstrations. These projects highlight Beijing’s role as a pioneer in adopting next-generation wireless technology.
Zhang Boxu, director of the Municipal Economic and Information Committee, stated that the technical preparations for 5G trials in Beijing are nearly complete. Once national standards are finalized, the market will officially open up. Testing has already begun at the Huairou test site, indicating that the city is actively working toward real-world deployment.
On a national scale, it is anticipated that by the end of this year, the main components of the 5G industry chain will reach pre-commercial readiness. Major telecom companies, including China Unicom, have announced 5G trials in seven cities—Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Xiong’an. These trials will submit applications to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, reinforcing Beijing’s position as a leader in 5G adoption.
Currently, the 4G network has been upgraded to support gigabit speeds, and the introduction of 5G is expected to bring even faster data transmission. Users can anticipate a significant reduction in buffering when streaming videos on mobile devices. Industry experts predict that 5G will achieve pre-commercial status in 2019, with large-scale commercial use beginning in 2020.
This year, Beijing will also accelerate the development of its sub-center smart city projects, focusing on improving information infrastructure and implementing smart city initiatives. Key projects include mobile public service platforms and integrated office portals. Smart streetlights, intelligent transportation systems, and urban IoT networks will play a crucial role in this transformation, as highlighted by Zhang Boxu.
In addition, the city plans to launch an upgraded version of the "Beijing Tong" app, enhancing digital services for residents. Over two million multi-functional smart cards will also be issued this year, further supporting the city’s vision for a more connected and efficient urban environment.
