Relying on the advantages of semiconductor factories, ROHM sets the threshold for high-quality LED

With the continuous advancement of LED technology, the application scope of LED is becoming more and more extensive, from full-color display to smart phones, computers, TV backlights, lighting, white goods, to automotive electronics and traffic signs. LED trace. In order to meet market demand, ROHM has launched various product series, including LEDs for lighting that can achieve high color rendering and high reliability, small and thin LEDs represented by PICOLED, and customized color LEDs for vehicles.

In response to the trend of LED lighting, ROHM pointed out that since lead and mercury-containing lamp lighting is harmful to the environment, it will inevitably be replaced by LED lighting. This part is the application of basic lighting. In addition, compared with the single function of traditional lighting fixtures, LED lighting can develop more additional functions to meet the needs of smart, wireless and mobile, which will lead to sophisticated lighting applications.

ROHM launches a full range of LED solutions, adding strength to LED lighting.

Demand from the two major aspects of basic lighting and exquisite lighting has created huge LED business opportunities, and has also attracted investment from various industries. However, with the addition of large manufacturers, the price competition of LEDs has become an inevitable challenge, especially the LED bulbs with lower entry barriers. In this regard, ROHM emphasized that excessive price competition is not the company's marketing strategy. Instead, ROHM wins the market with good product quality.

LED lighting takes into account both luminous efficiency and color rendering

In fact, because ROHM is a professional semiconductor factory, compared with other LED manufacturers who can only pursue brightness, ROHM can make full use of semiconductor production technology to achieve the best balance between luminous efficiency and color rendering. Color rendering refers to an index by which a light source causes objects to express or reproduce true colors. The higher the index, the better the color reproducibility (Ra of sunlight is 100).

For white LEDs for lighting, the market expects to have both high luminous efficiency and high color rendering, but the solutions that many LED manufacturers can provide always lose sight of each other. ROHM successfully developed the PSL01 and PSL02 series with color rendering (Ra) ≥ 80 and extremely high luminous efficiency by efficiently arranging the phosphor inside the package. Through the establishment of a high threshold, ROHM was able to break free from the quagmire of bargaining competition.

Small pitch products meet mobile needs

ROHM's semiconductor advantages also enable it to provide small-pitch LED products, which can meet the trend of thin, light, and short mobile devices. From functional mobile phones to the current era of smart phones, ROHM's small pitch LED products have been well received. ROHM said that small-pitch products have a certain degree of difficulty in surface packaging. In order to meet this demand, the ultra-small PICOLED launched by ROHM has a size of only 1006, the smallest in the world, and a thickness of only 0.2mm. This product can be applied to dot matrix displays.

It is understood that the minimum pitch of the traditional 1608 size products is 2mm, and the PICOLED is installed with a high pitch of 1.5mm at a minimum density, so it can show more detailed performance. ROHM also provides lighting effect drivers that can be used with this matrix, which can provide customers with complete solutions.

In order to make the package smaller and thinner, the internal LED components must also adopt small and thin specifications. For this purpose, ROHM uses the self-developed process technology from film formation to chip formation on the light-emitting layer on the wafer. The element size of aluminum gallium indium phosphide (AlGaInP) light-emitting LEDs is reduced to 0.13mm at the corners and the thickness t = 50μm, which fully meets the needs of mobile devices for miniaturization.

New technology overcomes automotive LED curing problems

In addition to general LED lighting and mobile applications, the automotive LED market with stringent specifications is a market that ROHM can play to its full potential. Regarding the interior use of vehicles, whether it is the main backlight of car audio, car navigation systems or air conditioning panels, LED light sources have been almost fully adopted. It is expected that LEDs will replace traditional bulbs used in indoor and warning lights, as well as instrument panel backlights that still use cold cathode tubes.

In the exterior of vehicles, in recent years, traditional bulbs such as taillights, turn signals, and positioning lights have been gradually replaced. Even the halogen lamps and HID (high brightness discharge) lamps used in traditional headlights have been replaced by LEDs. Moreover, from the point of view of environmental recognition, the trend of using LEDs as DayTIme Running Lamps (DRL) is even more noteworthy.

The automotive LED market is gradually expanding, but the entry barrier for this market is also relatively high. This is because automotive LEDs must take into account the impact of harsh environments, such as sulfur, ultraviolet light, and high temperatures, etc. will cause the LED life to be shortened, and the LED industry must be able to overcome These challenges.

Taking the exterior applications of vehicles such as taillights as an example, the lead frames of traditional LED packages are mostly silver-plated materials, which are prone to sulfidation and beam degradation problems. Successfully solved the problem of beam degradation caused by vulcanization.

In addition, in order to improve the reflectivity of LEDs, silver plating is generally used as the reflective layer, but this approach is not applicable to automobiles. Because silver will be blackened by sulfur in the oil and gas on the car, causing the brightness to decrease. To solve this problem, ROHM uses nickel-copper alloy plating as the reflective layer, and further improves the problems of cost increase and brightness reduction through packaging improvement.

Flexible OLED opens up more possibilities

LED applications are becoming more and more diverse, and the development of the lighting field is even more exciting. Especially the addition of OLEDs with thin and flexible characteristics will bring more possibilities for LED lighting. According to Yole Developpement's estimates, the market value of OLED lighting will grow from US $ 2.8 million in 2012 to US $ 1.7 billion in 2020, and over 70% of the market value contribution will come from the general lighting market.

In response to the future of the OLED lighting market, ROHM said that its subsidiary Lumiotec is already ready to make lighting not only a function, but also a fashion trend.

A USB Flash Drive, also variously known as a thumb drive, pen drive, gig stick, flash stick, jump drive, disk key, disk on key, flash-drive, memory stick, USB stick or USB memory, is a data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated USB interface. It is typically removable, rewritable and much smaller than an optical disc. USB Flash drives are often used for the same purposes for which floppy disks or CDs were once used; i.e. for storage, data back-up and transfer of computer files. They are smaller, faster, have thousands of times more capacity, and are more durable and reliable because they have no moving parts.
