5G card battle: the next ten years of communication preliminaries

While the three major domestic operators are still waiting for 4G licensing, 5G is ready to move.

"When we first started relevant research two years ago, no one was willing to talk about 5G. Now I am very happy to see more and more companies join in." Dr. Afif Osseiran from Ericsson, head of the EU METIS 5G project Said in an interview recently.

For example, Samsung announced high-profile not long ago that it has successfully developed a core technology for 5G, which is expected to begin deployment in 2020. Compared with the current 4G network transmission rate of 75Mbps, Samsung's 5G network transmission rate can reach 1Gbps.

In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China also took the lead in setting up a promotion group called "MG2020" at the beginning of this year, and officially launched the national 5G standardization research work. Huang Xiaoqing, president of China Mobile Research Institute, also said before that although the commercialization of 4G networks has not yet been officially launched, China Mobile has already invested in the research and development of 5G networks.

Afif Osseiran told reporters that the research on 5G by various organizations is still at a very early stage, and it is even impossible to talk about "forming a consensus". Therefore, at this stage, everyone hopes to attract more members to gather more ideas, so that in the next stage of standardization, they can occupy more advantages.

According to the reporter's latest understanding, Afif Osseiran may directly contact China Mobile next month to discuss 5G standard issues with China Mobile Research Institute. An Ericsson wireless product person told reporters, "Now it's pure research, not to mention standardization. Of course we hope to reach agreement with China Mobile."

Afif Osseiran revealed that the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) radio communication department is drafting two important documents, mainly about the 2020 mobile communications vision and technical documents, "In these two documents, a basic Global consensus. "

At present, all the participants who start 5G research, whether they are operators, equipment vendors or other research institutions, hope to "export" their research results to the documents of the International Telecommunication Union in order to seize the opportunities of the 5G industry.

5G concept divergence

What exactly is 5G?

As the mobile communication technology is upgraded from 2G, 3G, and 4G from generation to generation, people will naturally call the next-generation technology 5G. But what will the fifth generation mobile communication technology-5G-look like and what should be covered? There is currently no unified concept.

Samsung's previously announced 5G technology is a transmission technology that uses millimeter waves. According to media reports, Samsung ’s testers achieved 64 gigabytes per second with 64 antenna groups, and users can download a complete movie in less than a second.

Experts from the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute said that this could be used as a basic technology for laying 5G networks. Samsung is expected to achieve commercial use in 2020.

However, in Afif Osseiran's view, 5G will solve more than just transmission speed. Instead, it has to cope with the large-scale growth from networked devices and the challenges that different application scenarios have on network requirements.

"Simply speeding up is no longer meaningful." Some communication equipment vendors analyzed to reporters that information transmission is no longer the bottleneck, or the user's "pain point". Because the user's demand for speed will not increase without limit, or is not the first demand, now everyone is more concerned about the stability of the connection, how to switch freely in different application scenarios and other issues.

Afif Osseiran believes, "Regarding the evolution technology, especially for 4G, like LTE technology, there will continue to be new versions of evolution, and there will also be some new technologies, such as communication between vehicles and ultra-high reliability. Requirements and new communication technologies brought about by some new applications. "

According to Ericsson ’s forecast, the amount of mobile data will increase by a factor of 1,000 in the next ten years, and the user data rate will reach a high rate of 100 times today. At the same time, the number of device interconnections can be up to 100 times the present. Therefore, the network connection and the processing capacity of the data volume must be greatly improved.

Ericsson's philosophy is: "5G is not a network technology, nor is it a few completely new wireless access technologies." Ericsson believes that 5G is "experience-centric"-rather than the technology-centric way in the past, through integration A variety of wireless access technologies provide the ultimate experience to meet different needs.

The EU takes the first step

In the early research on 5G, the EU took the lead.

In November 2012, the European Union announced the launch of a project called METIS (Key Technologies for Wireless Mobile Communications for the Construction of the Information Society in 2020). The total investment in this research project amounts to 27 million euros.

At present, METIS has 29 members, including Ericsson, France Telecom and other major equipment manufacturers and operators, many European academic institutions and the BMW Group. It is worth noting that Huawei in China is also involved, and the main participant is Huawei's branch in Germany.

The goal of METIS is to lay the foundation for the establishment of next-generation (5G) mobile and wireless communication systems, to reach consensus on the future mobile communication and wireless technologies in terms of needs, characteristics, and indicators, and to achieve the concept, prototype, and key technology composition. Consensus.

Within METIS, all tasks are divided into eight working groups, of which six technical working groups are respectively responsible for Japanese operators DOCOMO, Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens, Nokia, and Ericsson. Each working group is responsible for coordinating a study. In addition, Ericsson will also be responsible for two non-technical working groups, including standard formulation and publication, as well as project management and supervision.

Afif Osseiran explained that this does not mean that each research is undertaken by one company. "Each study is divided into many specific tasks, and all members can participate in it."

Through such a mechanism, METIS hopes to encourage as many stakeholders as possible to reach consensus before 5G achieves global standardization. "In addition, we will also listen to the opinions of more stakeholders, such as China, the United States, and manufacturers with important positions in the industrial field." Afif Osseiran said.

For METIS members, some patents may be generated during the research of the pre-standards. These patents will eventually benefit all members through patent sharing agreements and other means.

China's 5G research has also begun recently. On April 19, 2013, the first meeting of the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group was held in Beijing. This is an organization jointly established by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Science and Technology. The goal is to "organize all domestic forces and actively develop international Cooperation to jointly promote the development of 5G international standards. "

According to the previous laws of the communications industry, every ten years is generally a new technology cycle. For example, the currently deployed LTE 4G network is about standardization research started about ten years ago. Therefore, more and more organizations and participants are now involved in the 5G advance card slot.
