On December 4th, NetEase Smart News reported that this morning, the Fourth World Internet Conference's Artificial Intelligence Forum was held in Wuzhen. During the event, Academician Zhang Jian from the Chinese Academy of Sciences delivered a speech. He shared insights on how to determine which jobs can be replaced by computers based on five key rules. Zhang Jian highlighted that with data and AI algorithms, we can perform tasks without prior knowledge—such as playing Go. While many people are excited about AI's capabilities, like AlphaGo surpassing humans, they also feel anxious. If a computer can master a complex game like Go, what about other jobs? Will they too be replaced? He explained that if a job meets five specific conditions—such as being deterministic, having complete information, and involving a single task—it becomes easy for a computer to handle. These conditions make it straightforward for machines to replace humans in such roles. So, what kinds of jobs fall into this category? These are jobs that follow strict, well-defined rules, much like playing Go. They involve no ambiguity, clear information, and limited knowledge. If your work aligns with these criteria, it’s likely to be automated sooner or later. Zhang also mentioned that machines can take over dangerous tasks that humans find difficult or unsafe. However, this isn’t a threat to humanity—it’s more of an opportunity. These are tasks that humans either can’t do or shouldn’t do due to risk. According to Zhang, these types of jobs are routine and repetitive. Most people aren’t fond of them or aren’t good at them, so automation is welcomed in these areas. In addition, Zhang discussed the limitations of deep learning. He pointed out that training a system to recognize cats requires thousands of images under various backgrounds and situations. But if shown a new image it hasn’t seen before, it might fail. This is because the system doesn’t truly understand what a cat is—it just identifies patterns. This lack of real comprehension poses risks, as decisions made by AI may seem wrong to humans, but the reason for the error remains unclear. Therefore, Zhang emphasized that the future of AI should focus on creating systems that are not only powerful but also transparent and understandable.
