The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology formally released the 5G mid-band use plan

China has made remarkable progress in its 5G frequency utilization strategy. Yesterday, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially announced the mid-band frequency plan for the 5G system. The plan specifies that the 3300-3400MHz (primarily for indoor use), 3400-3600MHz, and 4800-5000MHz bands will serve as the core frequencies for 5G deployment. This makes China the first country globally to release a comprehensive mid-band frequency plan for 5G systems, setting a strong foundation for future development. The Ministry emphasized that the 5G system is a critical component of China’s broader strategy to become a digital powerhouse. It represents a key platform for advancing next-generation information and communication technologies. Frequency resources are essential for the research, development, and deployment of 5G networks. To meet diverse performance requirements such as coverage, capacity, and connection density, 5G systems rely on a combination of high, mid, and low-frequency bands. The mid-band frequencies released this time offer a balanced approach, supporting both wide coverage and high capacity—making them ideal for early 5G deployments in China. By releasing the mid-band frequency plan ahead of many other countries, the Ministry is expected to drive innovation in 5G technology, testing, standardization, and industrial development. In the coming years, additional frequency resources—including high and low bands—will be allocated to support the full-scale application and growth of 5G networks. Although global 5G standards are still being finalized, the first major version is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Major players across the industry are accelerating their efforts. Chinese operators are currently conducting trials in several cities, with large-scale field tests planned for 2018. Commercial trials are anticipated to begin in the same year, with full commercial availability expected in China by 2020. This timeline highlights the rapid pace at which China is moving toward a fully functional 5G ecosystem.
