Apple's FaceID Sensor Boosts Total Output of Suppliers
Apple's iPhone X introduced facial recognition technology for device unlocking, capturing widespread attention. Austria Microelectronics (AMS AG), a key supplier of FaceID sensors, has seen its stock surge by over 200% this year. Analysts from Morgan Stanley believe the stock still has significant upside, with a target price of 125 Swiss francs—nearly 32% above the closing price on October 10th.
The company’s stock, listed on the Swiss exchange, has gained an impressive 226.64% so far in 2023. According to a report by Barron’s, Morgan Stanley analyst Francois Meunier highlighted that Apple initially used TouchID on a limited number of devices but later expanded it across multiple iPhone and iPad models. He predicts a similar trajectory for FaceID, which could drive strong growth for AMS in the coming years.
In addition to front-facing 3D sensors, the next-generation iPhone may also feature a 3D sensor module near the main camera on the back, enabling enhanced AR capabilities. This advancement could allow users to measure clothing sizes virtually online, opening up new possibilities for e-commerce and augmented reality experiences.
Beyond smartphones, AMS’s 3D sensing technology holds potential in self-driving cars and AI applications. Meunier also noted the company’s innovative infrared-based sensors, which can detect blood vessels in the wrist without piercing the skin. Though not yet mass-produced, these sensors show great promise for future health monitoring solutions.
Morgan Stanley estimates that Apple could account for 70-75% of AMS’s revenue in 2023, significantly higher than the current 40%. Meanwhile, corporate users have shown strong confidence in FaceID, with 81% of respondents from medium and large companies believing it is reliable enough to replace traditional passwords.
Despite this, TouchID remains the preferred biometric method among users, scoring highest in terms of ease of use, reliability, and overall preference. However, many employees are eager to adopt FaceID, with 73% expressing a desire to use it instead of passwords. Even those who haven’t used the technology before consider it highly trustworthy.
Apple states that the chance of someone else unlocking an iPhone via FaceID is about one in a million, compared to one in 50,000 for TouchID. After five failed attempts, users must enter a password. However, the company acknowledges that FaceID may struggle with twins, young children, or individuals with similar facial features. For added security, using a password is still recommended.
