The working-class living-room projection party isn’t about splurging. It’s about making do with what you have, and it doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. I just want to say—projection is simpler than you think. My setup isn’t top-tier. I have a low-end 1080p projector, the H6510bd, which costs around 3,600 yuan. A free fish 95, which is a budget media player, costs about 3,600 yuan as well. I also have a low-end Yamaha RX365 amplifier with DTS support, costing around 400 yuan. No dedicated screen—just an aluminum frame with silver fabric, which cost about 300 yuan. In fact, a white wall could work too, but it might look less elegant. The speakers are basic, 300 yuan for a 5.1 system from Shanghai, and I never even used the subwoofer. Cables? I bought a box of 200 yuan worth, but only used a third of it. The player, a 1186 model, costs just a few dozen dollars and plays 1080p and low-bitrate Blu-rays without any issues, thanks to a Gigabit network connection. In total, everything adds up to around 5,000 yuan. Why this setup? When my child was in elementary school, we didn’t want a TV in the living room to encourage reading over watching. We often don’t have time to watch TV at home. At night, we help our child with homework and read together. There's not much time to watch TV in the bedroom either. We only watch cartoons on Friday and Saturday nights. For new movies, we prefer going to the cinema, so our home projection mainly shows old films we’ve collected. The living room is 3.9 meters wide, and the projection is 133 inches. I mounted the projector on the wall, ensuring proper ventilation and covering it with a decorative panel. I use a remote control to manage power-on and power-off, and the projector and amplifier are linked. The equipment models aren’t clearly labeled, but you can find better options easily. I download videos from the internet, mostly 1080p files around 10GB in size, and very few are blue-ray quality. Since I watch them at night, the image quality is still satisfactory. Even with a low-end projector, if it’s not a resin-lens model, it should work fine. The house had no pre-installed wiring, so I had to run cables along the edges. My friend helped me install the tubes inside the walls. I tested different decorative panels and found one that looked great. The amplifier and players are all placed in the right frame, and the cables come from below. During the installation, the house wasn’t finished, so some parts had to be adjusted later. I ordered an ultra-thin advertising box, which arrived and was easy to assemble. It’s only 4cm thick, and the edges look almost frameless. The curtain frame is nearly frameless, and the pressure bar is very smooth. Some people say black borders are distracting, but at night, they blend in nicely. I set the projection size to 133 or 134 inches, and it looks great. The shade cloth is smooth and has no wrinkles after a year of use. The width shrank slightly, but after pressing, it looks good. Cutting the fabric felt satisfying. The projector wasn’t perfectly aligned, and the left side leaked a little, but the frame and curtain look almost frameless. Is this a “frameless TV”? The fabric shrank a bit, making it a little darker. If the area had been wider, it would have been better. After pressing, cutting the fabric was fun. There was a focusing issue with some old phones, but overall, the image quality is good. Here are some test shots. These are 720p, taken casually with a phone, but the black areas still show well. Projection is perfect for movie lovers who enjoy classic films. I watch "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Godfather" multiple times a year. If you like the latest movies, go to the cinema. But for me, the content matters more than the format. If you're not into TV ads, a projector is a great alternative. It offers a larger screen and better immersion than regular TVs. With smart boxes, you can even sing karaoke. Just keep the volume down in residential buildings.
