[PConline News] This year, AMD and Intel have kicked off a high-stakes battle in the processor market. While AMD launched its 16-core Ryzen Threadripper, Intel unveiled its 18-core Core i9 lineup. In May, at the Taipei Computer Show, Intel officially introduced the Core i9 brand and the Core X Series processors. However, the highest-core processor Intel had previously released was the 10-core Core i7-7920X. The more powerful 14-core, 16-core, and 18-core flagship models, such as the Core i9-7980X, were initially expected to arrive later this fall. Now, Intel has officially confirmed the release dates for these high-end chips. The Core X Series processors, launched in late May, include both Core i7 and Core i9 brands. These CPUs are built on the Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X architectures, with the Core i9 series specifically based on Skylake-X. The entry-level model is the 10-core, 20-thread Core i9-7900X, followed by the 12-core, 24-thread Core i9-7920X. Both of these have already been shipped and are available on the market, with domestic prices set at 7,499 yuan and 8,999 yuan respectively. However, the higher-core variants—14, 16, and 18 cores—were delayed until now. Originally scheduled for this fall, Intel has now confirmed that the 14-core Core i7-7940X, 16-core Core i9-7960X, and 18-core Core i9-7980X will begin shipping immediately. Distributors and retailers across the country are already stocked up with these models. The Core i9-7940X features 14 cores and 28 threads, with a base clock speed of 3.1 GHz and a boost frequency of up to 4.4 GHz. It includes a 19.25 MB L3 cache, 44 PCIe lanes, and a TDP of 165W. Its recommended retail price is $1,399. The Core i9-7960X is a 16-core, 32-thread processor with a base clock of 2.8 GHz and a boost frequency of 4.4 GHz. It comes with a 22 MB L3 cache, 44 PCIe lanes, and the same 165W TDP. The suggested price is $1,699. The top-tier model, the Core i9-7980X, boasts 18 cores and 36 threads, with a base frequency of 2.6 GHz and a boost of 4.4 GHz. It features a 24.75 MB L3 cache, 44 PCIe lanes, and a TDP of 165W. Its recommended price is $1,999. Although the domestic pricing hasn't been officially announced yet, it's expected to be revealed soon. Enthusiasts and PC builders who are interested in these high-performance processors should keep an eye out for more updates from us in the coming days.
