AMD and Intel have been locked in a fierce battle this year, each pushing the boundaries of high-end processor performance. AMD launched its 16-core Ryzen Threadripper, while Intel unveiled its 18-core Core i9 lineup. In May, during the Taipei Computer Show, Intel officially introduced the Core i9 brand along with the Core X Series processors. However, the highest core count available from Intel before this was the 10-core Core i7-7920X. The more powerful 14-core, 16-core, and 18-core flagship models—such as the Core i9-7980X—were originally expected to be released later this year. But today, Intel confirmed that the 14-core Core i7-7940X, 16-core Core i9-7960X, and 18-core Core i9-7980X will now be available for purchase. The Core X Series processors, launched at the end of May, include both Core i7 and Core i9 models. These chips are based on the Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X architectures. The Core i9 series is built on the Skylake-X architecture, with the base model being the 10-core, 20-thread Core i9-7900X, followed by the 12-core, 24-thread Core i9-7920X. Both have already been released and are available in the market, with domestic prices set at 7,499 yuan and 8,999 yuan respectively. However, the higher-core-count models were delayed until later this year. Now, Intel has finally announced that the 14-core Core i7-7940X, 16-core Core i9-7960X, and 18-core Core i9-7980X will begin shipping immediately. Retailers and distributors across the country have already received stock of these new processors. The Core i9-7940X features 14 cores and 28 threads, with a base clock speed of 3.1 GHz and a boost frequency of up to 4.4 GHz. It includes 19.25 MB of L3 cache, 44 PCIe lanes, and a TDP of 165W. Its recommended retail price is $1,399. The Core i9-7960X offers even more power with 16 cores and 32 threads, a base clock of 2.8 GHz, and a boost frequency of 4.4 GHz. It comes with 22 MB of L3 cache, 44 PCIe lanes, and the same 165W TDP. The suggested price is $1,699. The top-tier model, the Core i9-7980X, boasts 18 cores and 36 threads, with a base frequency of 2.6 GHz and a boost of up to 4.4 GHz. It features 24.75 MB of L3 cache, 44 PCIe lanes, and a TDP of 165W. The recommended price for this processor is $1,999. While the domestic pricing has not yet been officially announced, it's expected to be revealed soon.
