A grain of rice how extreme extreme meters A1 laser television evaluation

In the latest month, there’s been a significant spike in the exposure rate of "laser television." This surge can largely be attributed to the involvement of a brand with its own intellectual property, which has recently entered the market. They’ve introduced an appealing home laser television with a small footprint, priced at just 9,999 yuan, without a standard anti-light curtain. Following this, another projector maker, Mimi, officially unveiled their 4K dual-color laser TV T1 on July 25th of this year. Around the same time, they also released the 1080p A1 and the upgraded A1 Pro models. So, what exactly makes laser televisions stand out? This time, we were invited to review the Laimi A1 online. Let’s dive into the experience.

A grain of rice's extreme A1 laser television evaluation

The sleek and modern design of the A1 and its backside ensure it fits well into any home decor
The Aimi A1 laser TV features a single blue laser light source, boasting a nominal brightness of 3000 ANSI lumens. Its resolution is 1920×1080, supporting 4K video decoding and playback. The color saturation is nominally 82.9%. It’s equipped with a Harman Kardon audio system, including four 20-watt speakers, covering mid, low, and high frequencies. To minimize the impact of desktop materials on sound quality, a hanging design was incorporated. The device has 3GB of storage and 32GB of memory, along with three HDMI ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and a USB 2.0 port. The total weight of the device is 21 kilograms.

Product appearance details

Three laser TVs launched by Miji
The final price of the Mimi A1 stands at 22,999 yuan, with a standard anti-light curtain, set to launch officially on August 17th on Jingdong. Compared to its competitors, the A1 offers a more accessible entry point for laser TV buyers and is quite competitive in terms of price.

Real shooting environment: A room with double-sided lighting around 10:00 am
Our actual testing took place in a room with double-sided lighting around 10:00 am. Both sides of the curtains were near the windows. A standard light-resistant screen was chosen. Given that the anti-light curtain slightly reduces brightness, the image didn’t appear overly bright. Upon checking the photos, we discovered that the original image still had rich dark details and skin tones, even after enlargements. This is rare in prior reviews. This indicates that higher brightness improves the picture quality. Let’s take a closer look! Extreme Design? From the Details to Success or Failure - The A1 sports a cool, fashionable black finish, looking sleek and calm while blending seamlessly into a home setting. The top is made of mirror material, with dimensions of 0.77 × 0.36 × 0.1 meters and weighing approximately 21 kilograms. An adult male might find moving the host alone slightly challenging. The anti-light curtain is removable and easy to install, with a caliper included within the chassis to assist users in calibrating the position between the main unit and the curtain.

Front appearance of the A1 laser TV
The A1 has four independent sound units. The two front units are woofers, while the rear two are tweeters. Listening reveals a rich, textured sound with clear details. The volume control range is wide, and the sound doesn’t become muddled or noisy when turned up.

Contrast between wood texture and the black body
The A1 uses walnut wood in its design. Choosing wood is a challenge in industrial production, as it must consider issues like texture, color, and pest resistance, resulting in low yields. Using wood helps the machine blend seamlessly into a home environment, creating a warmer ambiance. However, wood is prone to absorbing moisture and may warp or crack over time, requiring careful attention to the indoor humidity levels.

Remote control is simple and sleek

Design of the bottom allows quick switching between focus and volume adjustment functions
The remote control is user-friendly and sleek, featuring a wealth of functions. The one-piece design with a lithium battery allows the function switch button at the bottom to toggle between volume keys and focus keys. Additionally, the remote control includes a flying mouse function and gravity sensing. However, the flying mouse function can cause excessive sensitivity due to slight shifts in the remote's angle, making precise input on the virtual keyboard difficult and prone to accidental presses.

Switching between theater and music modes is straightforward

The host automatically pauses when an object blocks the light
Once the A1 is powered on, users can quickly switch between theater and music modes, achieving instant screen effects. Approaching the host and blocking the lens light temporarily halts the screen. For homes with children, this feature protects their eyes from the strong light emitted by the glowing lens. Home with Pressure? Solving the Ultra-Short Throw Dilemma - Using an anti-light curtain enhances the visual experience and minimizes the impact of ambient light on picture quality. The A1 comes standard with a 100-inch light curtain. Currently, the market price for such curtains is around 5,000 yuan each. For easier transportation and storage, the four corners of the anti-light curtain are detachable, allowing it to roll up and remain lightweight.

100-inch light curtain with standard A1

Curtain frame with a polished surface comparable to a mobile phone’s thickness

Vertical distance from the lens to the curtain is only about 60 cm
We measured the projection ratio of this laser TV. The screen width is about 126 centimeters, with a vertical distance from the lens to the screen of about 60 centimeters, giving the machine a throw ratio of approximately 0.48. The ultra-short focus model maximizes user space utilization. According to Kizemi, this TV can project a 100-inch screen at just 18 centimeters from the curtain. Shadow Details Are Bigger! - Before we delve into the test footage, we prepared some real-life shots to verify the actual effect of the A1 laser TV. This shot was taken at around 10:00 am. The side of the projection screen faces the window, creating a complex environment. Initially, we thought such shading conditions would negatively affect the laser TV, but upon enlarging the real shot image, it still displayed rich picture details. Remarks: Screen size is 2.23 x 1.26 meters, and the projection distance is 0.6 meters.

Shooting scene with two-sided lighting

After enlarging the original image 100%, the shadow details remain intact and clear

Clear focus, distinct boundary contrast

Bright and dark contrast is excellent, and the screen brightness is even

No color cast on the screen

Accurate color, bright and clear picture

There is a certain level of color that can reflect a certain atmosphere
Due to the use of a light curtain, the picture becomes less translucent. From the above real shots, we can see that the machine performs better with warm-color pictures, displaying more layers. For cold-colored screens, the blue tends to appear slightly purple, indicating that the color reproduction could be improved. The Ultimate Exploration of Sharpness and Color Accuracy - Sample PPTs are the best way to test sharpness. While we don't use laser TVs for business presentations, sharpness reflects the details in images. We used the same PPT images from past evaluations. On a 100-inch screen, these PPTs still appeared clear and defined, even at a viewing distance of about 5 meters.

Clear boundaries without smudging or contrast issues

Clear and intuitive image with good information

Comfortable contrast, soft without obvious dark corners
The Laimi laser television A1 uses an ultra-short focal lens, yet there are no noticeable dark corners in our PPT presentation. If you need to use PPT demonstrations in daily life, this machine meets user needs. Besides the PPT test, we also conducted regular color tests. By comparing the original image with the real shot, we identified issues with the image.

This real picture can be enlarged to see more details

In comparing the original image with the real shot, we noticed that the skin details, often lost in previous tests, were preserved in this real shot. Upon enlargement, more skin details became visible. However, the cold-colored picture display deviates, with a purple tint appearing in the four-color map and the real shot picture. This suggests the machine performs better with warm-toned displays but struggles with cool-toned ones. Extreme = Sales Guarantee - Summary: Our evaluation is based on a 1080p A1 engineering prototype. During this evaluation, the laser TV A1 was tested in a soft light environment, simulating everyday home settings. After pairing with an anti-light curtain, the experience felt similar to an LCD TV with a matte screen in a bright environment. From our real shots, we can see that the machine excels in displaying human skin details thanks to its brightness advantage. In terms of contrast, the aircraft shows better shadow details that remain clear upon magnification. The colors appear natural without being overly saturated. From the actual shooting results, the machine emphasizes the warm color screen display, but there is a problem with color casting in cold-toned screens. Therefore, there is still room for improvement. Manufacturers should address this in future iterations.

The advent of ultra-thin laser TVs is a major development for the entire laser TV market. At a price point of 22,999 yuan, the A1 laser TV has been launched. Netizens compare it to the Miji laser TV priced at 9,999 yuan. Although Miji laser TVs are cheaper, they don’t include anti-light curtains. The current market price for a light-resistant screen ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 yuan. The A1 includes a standard anti-light curtain. Additionally, the price of the laser TV includes on-site installation and setup, which is very convenient for consumers.

In terms of market positioning, Mimi A1 aligns more with the tastes of mass consumers. The Ami Pro A1 Pro is priced at 29,999 yuan, with a 7,000-yuan price difference from the A1, making it suitable for consumers with higher product performance expectations. Polar meters T1 uses a dual-color laser, increasing the cost due to the high price of red lasers, raising the total selling price to 79,999 yuan, more suited for affluent families and consumers with higher quality demands. From my perspective, the Mimi A1 is ideal for laser TV newcomers, and its viewing effect is commendable. We anticipate more sophisticated products entering the market and hope for technological innovations to further reduce costs for exploring potential users. We’ll also keep an eye on whether this year’s sales targets will be met.
