I. Introduction
When I decided to purchase a new notebook for college, I spent some time thinking about which brand and model to get. After an hour of deliberation, I finally settled on Dell's XPS series, primarily because it offers two years of on-site service. My previous Dell XPS420 was also experiencing issues with its graphics card, so I felt confident in Dell’s service quality. Choosing between brands and models was straightforward, but finding the right configuration was a bit tricky. Watching reviews and benchmark tests helped me narrow down my options.
The XPS series has several appealing features: it looks sleek, the display is fantastic, and it’s considered a high-end product with excellent customer service. However, one downside is its price tag. When comparing deals, I found that purchasing through Dell's official website for over 7,400 RMB or on Amazon for around 6,099 RMB was the most cost-effective option. While I briefly considered the 128GB SSD, I ultimately decided that encouraging students to focus on their studies was more important, so I went ahead with the purchase.
Amazon delivery times have improved significantly. I placed my eleventh order, and my twelfth item arrived promptly.
II. Upgrading the SSD
After using the laptop for a while, I realized that a larger SSD would be beneficial, especially since I wanted to install a few games. Given the support for NVMe technology, I opted for a cheaper 2280 M.2 PCIe SSD. Although Samsung offers several affordable options, I chose Toshiba’s XG4 due to its reputation for generating less heat, even though its performance is nearly identical. Many Taobao sellers claim their products have quick boot times, but it’s clear that some are just exaggerating.
Opening the XPS13 requires special tools. Out of the box, the XPS doesn’t allow easy access to its internals. To open the back cover, I needed a T5 screwdriver, which proved essential. Initially, I hesitated to spend money on a screwdriver set, but given how long I’d been waiting for my XPS, it seemed worthwhile.
Behind the seven-plus-one screws, I used a T5 screwdriver for all but one common cross-head. If you’re planning to open the back cover, it’s worth buying a cheap T5 screwdriver online. Inside, I found a small plate behind the cover, which was relatively clean and unmarked.
To open the lid, I used a small pry tool, which made the process easier. It’s important to note that many guides recommend disconnecting the battery before attempting such operations, as working live can be dangerous. Even so, the risk remains, and caution is key.
After removing the screws securing the SSD, I carefully lifted it out. It’s crucial to follow safety guidelines and avoid any unnecessary risks. Below is a close-up of the new SSDs:

Once the SSD was swapped out, I reassembled the back cover.
III. Restoring the System
Restoring the system turned out to be more complicated than expected. Initially, I used Dell’s built-in recovery software to create a recovery disk on a 32GB USB drive. The process was straightforward—insert the drive, launch the software, and wait for it to complete. This took over half an hour.
This operation was performed before swapping out the SSD. Afterward, I attempted to restore the system using the same USB drive, but encountered issues halfway through. The initial steps included selecting a language and agreeing to terms, followed by choosing to restore from the drive.
However, after a prolonged wait, the restoration failed, displaying an error message. At full fan speed, the system required a constant power supply, as shown in the window below.
Unfortunately, the 128GB SSD could not be used for restoration purposes, as it had already been upgraded to another laptop. Contacting Dell support yielded a swift response. They recommended creating a USB system disk using the ISO image provided on their website. The download process was straightforward, and once the necessary files were installed, I created the recovery disk without issue.
Despite these efforts, restoring the system proved unreliable. Windows 10 registration failed, and after waiting two days, the issue persisted. I refrained from sharing frustrated screenshots but decided to reinstall the system entirely. A minor hiccup arose during the reinstallation process: the SSD wasn’t detected until I switched from RAID mode to AHCI in the BIOS settings.

IV. Conclusion
Reflecting on the entire experience, upgrading the SSD was worthwhile despite the challenges. While the new SSD performs adequately, it falls short of expectations based on benchmarks. Expanding the storage capacity was achieved, but future purchases might lean toward larger SSDs available on platforms like JD.com.
If given the choice again, I’d opt for a higher-capacity SSD directly from Dell’s official website rather than relying on third-party sellers. Between the 7,499 RMB and 6,099 RMB options, the latter appears far more appealing due to its affordability and adequate storage.
Overall, while the XPS series remains a solid choice for students, personalization and upgrades require careful consideration to ensure optimal performance and satisfaction.
