HART communication is no longer difficult

HART (addressable remote sensor high-speed channel) is a global standard for sending and receiving digital information via analog cables between intelligent field devices and control or monitoring systems (such as PLC and DOS systems). Through two-way HART communication, you can access additional information between the field controller and the host controller (which ranges from the handheld device to the device controller or asset management system). Fortunately, this two-way digital information utilizes the existing 4mA to 20mA network. It can be easily deployed on existing infrastructure (see Figure 1).

The key to the successful implementation of HART is the ability to accurately encode and decode HART communication signals in a noisy and harsh industrial environment, and to obtain the HART Communication Foundation's certification registration for the system. ADI used AD5421 (a 16-bit loop-powered 4mA to 20mA DAC) and AD5700 (HART, FSK modem) to develop a reference demonstration of a fully functional smart transmitter that supports HART. The circuit (see Figure 2) has passed compatibility testing and verification and is registered as a HART solution certified by the HART Communication Foundation. The registration shows that this ADI solution composed of AD5421 and AD5700 conforms to the HART physical layer protocol, and is therefore an effective solution that has been verified. ADI's industrial converter product portfolio also includes the AD5422 series, which is an industry benchmark solution, ideal for 4-wire transmitter applications, and the new AD5755 is a 16-bit four-channel ADC with innovative dynamic power control technology, mainly for multichannel I / O applications.

These industrial DAC series and AD5700 HART modems are specially designed to effectively solve the problem of integration of HART and 4mA to 20mA communication. They use a single-pin design and can easily superimpose HART pulses on a preprogrammed 4mA to 20mA output. The combination of ADI's 4mA to 20mA DAC that supports HART and the new AD5700 HART modem greatly simplifies the design of systems that support HART, enhances reliability, and reduces the overall PCB size and cost. With components that can be seamlessly matched, ADI provides a complete signal chain for HART's 4mA to 20mA loop. By choosing the AD5700 and its associated ADI industrial converter, whether it is in the field device or I / O card, you can rest assured that your solution will comply with the HART protocol.
