New medical electronic device for accurately judging the source of pain

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine are examining the feasibility of developing a diagnostic device that uses functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) and support vector machines (SVM) to more accurately determine the source and intensity of pain without requiring patient information. Such a tool will enhance the diagnosis and treatment of physicians. The following is the researchers' explanation of current challenges and potential opportunities, published in the academic journal PlosOne.

Patients with severe cognitive or communication disorders—such as patients in the intensive care unit or elderly people with dementia—may not be able to provide effective information about pain on their own. For such patients, there are not many ways to determine the presence or absence of pain. Although there are behavioral judgment methods (such as evaluating facial expressions, vocalization, and body movements), they may also fail for patients whose movements are affected by paralysis and other diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a pain assessment tool based on physiology and without communicating with patients.

The project has not yet ushered in a breakthrough, but researchers have achieved some promising results, and have begun to consult medical institutions, hospitals, and patients on the prospects of this equipment. In addition to helping direct users, pain diagnosis and treatment tools can also provide opportunities for OEM manufacturers and semiconductor and magnetic material manufacturers.

Stanford researchers demonstrated highly accurate pain detection (up to 80%) in a series of experiments and concluded: "Through fMRI and SVM, you can detect pain without communicating with the tester." The researchers believe that the next work is to further experiment in the clinic environment.
