Harman demonstrates new detection technology - protecting cars from cyber attacks that attempt to interfere with car sensors

Harman has introduced a groundbreaking detection technology that identifies and reports fake speed limit signs, which could otherwise lead to unsafe driving conditions. This innovation was showcased at CES in Las Vegas as part of the Harman Shield solution, designed to automatically protect semi-autonomous vehicles from cyber threats targeting their sensors.

During the technical demonstration, an aggressive image with a misleading speed limit sign was used to trick the vehicle’s traffic recognition system, causing it to provide incorrect information and potentially affecting other systems like adaptive cruise control. The counterfeit sign was successfully detected and reported to the Harman Network Security Analysis Center, which uses the "Harman SHIELD" agent for 24/7 monitoring, offering comprehensive dashboards and analytics for vehicle safety events.

These deceptive images are specifically crafted to confuse machine vision systems, even though they are easily recognizable by humans. Such attacks pose a growing threat to autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), requiring innovative cybersecurity approaches to detect and mitigate risks. These types of attacks don’t require physical access or tampering with in-vehicle systems, yet they can lead to serious consequences, including large-scale traffic disruptions.

"In 2017, cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas, and London launched self-driving car pilots, and the attack surface for these vehicles continues to expand," said Yuval Weisglass, Vice President of Network Security for Autonomous Vehicles at Harman Zhilian Technology. "To safeguard against these cyber threats, we must integrate safety features into our designs and develop unconventional detection methods. As part of our ongoing R&D efforts, we continuously assess risks and implement mechanisms to secure new areas that may impact the attack surface of connected autonomous vehicles."

Self-driving car pilot programs have now been deployed in over 30 cities globally. By 2020, the number of fully automated vehicles on the road is expected to reach nearly 100,000, making them potential targets for hackers who might attempt to manipulate sensors or interfere with the environment around the vehicle. According to IHS Markit, 25% of global car sales will include similar cybersecurity cloud services provided by Harman within six years. "With the rise of the Internet of Vehicles, network security is becoming a critical component of the automotive industry," said IJ Markit, research director at IHS Markit. "This technology is especially vital for autonomous and driverless vehicles."
