According to a report by Reuters, Asahi Glass (AGC) has developed a specialized UV LED quartz lens. It is reported that the use of this improved quartz lens can simplify the manufacturing process of UV LEDs and reduce capital investment. The prototype of the quartz lens is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2018, with mass production anticipated to begin in 2019. Currently, mercury lamps are widely used for air and water disinfection. However, mercury is harmful to both human health and the environment. With the Minamata Convention on Mercury coming into effect in August 2017, the production and use of mercury lamps will gradually decline. In contrast, deep ultraviolet LEDs offer a more environmentally friendly alternative, with the potential to replace mercury lamps as the next-generation disinfection light source. Despite their advantages, UV LEDs still face several technical challenges. One key issue is the high cost and susceptibility to degradation of transparent adhesives used in bonding quartz lenses and window materials. Another challenge involves the soldering process between the package and the window. Manufacturers typically require large oxygen-free equipment during sealing. Additionally, current solder materials are too rigid, and the mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients between the package and window can lead to thermal stress, potentially causing cracks or leaks in the final product. The new quartz lens developed by AGC addresses two major issues. By integrating the quartz lens with the window material, the need for expensive and fragile adhesives is eliminated. The solder can be applied directly in a standard environment without the need for large-scale oxygen-free equipment. Moreover, the specially coated solder is softer, which helps reduce thermal stress and prevents cracking or leakage in UV LED devices. With these advancements, AGC’s innovation could significantly improve the reliability and cost-effectiveness of UV LED technology, paving the way for broader adoption in disinfection applications.
