Chinese companies enter the semiconductor storage market, the new forces will soon start the patent war
In 2017, the memory market witnessed a significant shift as rising prices for SSDs and DRAM drove up demand, making storage an emerging focal point globally. As China’s storage capabilities grow, the next challenge is navigating complex patent landscapes that could shape the future of its semiconductor industry.
With the gradual development of three major memory projects in China—Jinhua, Hefei, and others—domestic companies are set to become key players in the global memory market. However, this progress comes with challenges, particularly when it comes to intellectual property. The path to commercialization is not only about production but also about avoiding legal pitfalls.
Fujian Jinhua, for instance, has partnered with UMC, while the Hefei-based project collaborates with Beijing Zhaoyi on advanced 19nm DRAM technology. Both initiatives aim to launch their chips by the end of 2017, drawing considerable attention from the market. Analysts wonder if these new entrants could disrupt existing players like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron.
The legal challenges have already begun. In December 2017, Micron filed a lawsuit against Fujian Jinhua and UMC, accusing them of stealing trade secrets. This case highlights the growing tension between Chinese firms and global memory giants. According to Bill McClean of IC Insights, it's unlikely that Chinese companies can develop competitive memory chips without infringing on existing patents. Once they enter the market, major lawsuits are expected.
Li Peixi, a senior executive at South Asia Branch, expressed skepticism about the short-term impact of China’s independent memory R&D. He pointed out that without proper licensing, it’s difficult for Chinese companies to produce competitive products. Even if they do, local brands may avoid using them due to potential legal risks. He emphasized that most companies operating without technical authorization tend to be small and informal, often taking risky approaches.
Despite these challenges, the rise of China’s storage industry cannot be ignored. While Li Peixi doesn’t see an immediate threat, he acknowledges that the patent war is inevitable. Wang Yanhui of the China Mobile Phone Alliance stressed that core technological advancement is crucial for long-term success. Patents remain a critical issue for Chinese semiconductor companies as they strive to break into the global market.
South Asia Branch has been actively expanding its presence in mainland China, where it now generates 30% of its revenue. When asked about potential partnerships with Chinese manufacturers, Li Peiying responded with a clear "No," indicating that collaboration is not on the horizon.
As China continues to invest in its memory sector, the road ahead is filled with both promise and uncertainty. While the country is making strides, the reality is that innovation must go hand-in-hand with legal compliance. For now, the focus remains on building strong foundations, ensuring that the next chapter of China’s memory story is both technologically and legally sound.
