Ten years ago today, Jobs took MacBook Air out of his portfolio

On January 16, 10 years ago, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs unveiled the MacBook Air at Macworld 2008, declaring it "the world's thinnest laptop." The announcement was a game-changer and left the audience in awe.

This event marked a shift in how laptops were perceived. Unlike previous Macworld events, this one coincided with the end of CES, and Microsoft’s Bill Gates was about to retire. Jobs took the stage and pulled out the MacBook Air from a standard-sized paper envelope, shocking everyone with its ultra-thin design. It was unlike anything seen before — a sleek, lightweight machine that redefined what a portable computer could be.

Although other companies had already released thin laptops, they still felt bulky by comparison, often weighing over 3 pounds and featuring small screens. Apple managed to create a wedge-shaped design that was not only thinner than most competitors but also more refined. At the time, the Sony TZ series was considered one of the slimmest notebooks, yet the MacBook Air was even thinner. This was a major engineering breakthrough that set a new benchmark for laptops.

The original MacBook Air had just one USB port and no CD drive, a bold move that reflected Apple’s commitment to minimalism. It featured a multi-touch trackpad and solid-state drives (SSDs), which were relatively new at the time. Despite its simplicity, the design was ahead of its time. However, the price was steep — $1,799 — making it one of the most expensive laptops on the market even by today’s standards.

It took several years for Windows-based manufacturers to catch up with Apple’s innovation. For a while, Apple’s laptops received widespread praise. But as technology advanced, competitors began to match or even surpass the MacBook Air in terms of performance, display quality, and touchpad experience. Today, the MacBook Air starts at $999, but its design and screen feel outdated compared to modern alternatives like the Surface Laptop or Dell XPS 13.

Despite this, Apple has not redesigned the MacBook Air in recent years. Instead, the company introduced the 12-inch MacBook, which didn’t achieve the same level of success. While there is hope that Apple might bring a fresh update to the MacBook Air, it seems unlikely given its current position between the 12-inch MacBook and the 13-inch MacBook Pro. With no updates in nearly three years, the MacBook Air now feels like a relic, waiting for its final chapter.
