TVOC

Hazard and detection

Everyone knows that when it comes to materials and furniture used for decoration, an irritating gas is released. This gas not only smells bad but also poses a serious threat to human health. In some cases, it can cause dizziness or even lead to cancer. What exactly is this gas? Why is it so dangerous?

Gas hazards significantly impact health

According to research, this irritant gas is collectively known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These include aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorine-containing organic compounds, aldehydes, and alkanes. Formaldehyde, which is well-known, is one of the most common indoor pollutants. As reported by an official from the China Indoor Environment Association, during interior decoration, building materials and furniture are the main sources of TVOC emissions.

For example, paints, adhesives, and particle boards commonly used in home decoration all release these harmful substances. In furniture, wood-based panels, surface coatings, and bonding agents also contribute significantly to TVOC levels. Moreover, improper use of materials during construction can further increase the release of toxic gases.

The health risks are severe. The effects on the human body mainly manifest in three ways. First, most volatile organic compounds have strong odors that can irritate mucous membranes and damage the respiratory system. Short-term exposure may cause pulmonary edema, and in extreme cases, even death. Long-term exposure can affect the central nervous system through the bloodstream, leading to headaches, dizziness, and other discomforts.

Additionally, variations in VOC concentration may cause genetic toxicity and significantly increase the risk of cancer.

Beijing Huasheng Spectrum Instrument Co., Ltd. offers a comprehensive solution for detecting indoor air pollutants, including TVOC. Their analytical method follows the requirements set out in the Ministry of Construction's "Code for the Control of Environmental Pollution in Civil Buildings," ensuring accurate detection of TVOC and benzene content.

The specific analysis process includes the following steps:

1. On-site sampling using atmospheric samplers and TVOC adsorption tubes: At a flow rate of 0.5 L/min for 20 minutes, a total of 10 L of air is collected. This air passes through the adsorption tube, where TVOCs are captured and transported to the laboratory for further testing.

2. Gas chromatography setup: Using a 32 mm × 50 m capillary column with FID detection, the oven temperature starts at 50°C for 10 minutes, then increases at a rate of 5°C/min to 250°C, where the peaks are fully resolved. The sensitivity and attenuation settings are 10³ × 1. A standard sample of 100 mg/mL is injected into the adsorption tube at 1 μL, followed by a 5-minute purge with N₂ at 100 mL/min to create a standard adsorption tube. Thermal desorption is conducted at 300°C for 30 seconds, and the sample is injected after 5 minutes.

3. Calibration and sample analysis: After preparing the standard adsorption tube, the calibration curve is obtained using the external standard method. The same chromatographic conditions are applied to the sample, allowing for qualitative and quantitative analysis of TVOC components.

4. Calculation: Based on the results, the content of each component (in μg) is determined. The total amount of TVOC is calculated by summing all individual values. For unidentifiable components, a correction factor based on toluene is applied. The actual TVOC content in the air is then calculated by subtracting the blank value.

5. Reporting: The final result is compared against GB standards to determine compliance and generate a detailed report.
