Everyone knows that in materials and furniture used for decoration, an irritating gas is released. This gas not only smells bad but can also be harmful to health. In severe cases, it may cause dizziness or even cancer. What exactly is this gas? Why is it so dangerous?

Gas hazards greatly affect people's health

According to research, the irritating gas is known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These include aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorine-containing organic compounds, aldehydes, and alkanes. Formaldehyde, a well-known example, is one of the most common indoor pollutants. According to an official from the China Indoor Environment Association, during interior decoration, building materials and furniture are the main sources of TVOC emissions.

For instance, paints, adhesives, and particleboards commonly used in construction all release these harmful substances. In furniture, wood-based panels, surface coatings, and bonding glues are also significant contributors. Additionally, improper material selection or incorrect usage during installation can further increase the emission of toxic gases.

The impact on human health is very serious. The harm mainly manifests in three areas. First, all VOCs have strong odors that can irritate mucous membranes and damage the respiratory system. Short-term exposure to high concentrations can lead to pulmonary edema or even death. Long-term exposure can affect the central nervous system through the bloodstream, causing headaches, dizziness, and other discomforts.

Moreover, different concentrations of VOCs may cause genetic toxicity, significantly increasing the risk of cancer. It’s crucial to monitor and control these pollutants to ensure a safe living environment.

Beijing Huasheng Spectrum Instrument Co., Ltd. provides an analytical solution for indoor air pollutant detection, specifically for TVOC. Their method follows the requirements of the Ministry of Construction’s “Code for the Control of Environmental Pollution in Civil Buildings.” They perform quantitative detection of TVOC and benzene content.

The specific analysis process includes the following steps:

1. On-site sampling using atmospheric samplers and TVOC adsorption tubes: Collect 10L of air at a flow rate of 5L/min for 20 minutes. The air passes through the adsorption tube, capturing volatile organic compounds for laboratory testing.

2. Gas chromatography setup: Use a 32mm x 50m capillary column with FID detector. The oven temperature starts at 50°C, then increases by 5°C/min up to 250°C. The injection port and detector temperatures are both set to 260°C. Calibration is done using a 100mg/mL standard sample injected into the adsorption tube with N2 gas for 5 minutes at 100mL/min.

3. After preparing the standard adsorption tube, the calibration curve is obtained using the external standard method. The same conditions are applied to the sample, and the TVOC chromatograms are analyzed for qualitative and quantitative results.

4. Calculations: Determine the mass of each component (in μg), sum them up to get the total TVOC mass. Adjust for any unidentifiable components using toluene as a reference. Then, calculate the actual TVOC concentration in the indoor air based on the corrected volume.

5. Finally, the results are compared against GB standards to determine if the levels are within acceptable limits. A detailed report is then issued.
