What is Corning Gorilla Glass Vehicle Application Technology?

The automotive interior has evolved significantly, with a strong focus on functionality, safety, and mechanical performance. From 2015 to 2017, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) invested heavily in improving the user experience of car interiors and human-computer interaction, which directly affect consumer satisfaction. At the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, over 600 models were displayed, and at least 200 of them featured central control information systems. More than 150 models included advanced infotainment setups. According to recent data, the average number of screens per vehicle is currently 0.9, but this is expected to rise to 2.1 by 2024. While traditional materials like soda-lime glass and plastics still dominate the market, innovative alternatives are gaining traction. Corning, a global leader in materials science, has introduced its Gorilla Glass technology into the automotive sector. This material, already widely used in smartphones, is now being applied to car windows and displays, offering drivers a more intuitive and modern control experience while supporting the industry's shift toward lighter, fuel-efficient vehicles. Corning Gorilla Glass is designed to deliver superior user experiences, bringing the quality of smartphone touchscreens into the automotive environment. Wang Jianbo, Commercial Director of Corning Automotive Glass Division in Asia, emphasized that the company strictly adheres to automotive industry standards for physical properties, chemical resistance, and weather durability. Before mass production, every product undergoes rigorous testing and certification to meet these high requirements. Dr. Sun Yawei, Director of Corning® Gorilla® Glass Automotive Interior Technology, highlighted that Gorilla Glass has been used in automotive interiors since 2015. Through advanced chemical tempering techniques, the glass achieves exceptional strength, measured by two key factors: compressive stress layer depth and surface compressive stress—both far exceeding those of conventional sodium-calcium glass. Its advantages include excellent scratch resistance and impact resistance, as demonstrated in head impact simulations conducted at Corning’s U.S. laboratories. In addition to strength, Corning Gorilla Glass offers safety features, ultra-thin design, sharp touch response, and a refined texture. The anti-glare treatment on the glass surface is particularly challenging, requiring high stability and uniformity to maintain clarity and resolution. This is a significant challenge in the industry. As automotive design trends move toward aesthetics and innovation, 3D modeling is becoming increasingly popular. Corning Gorilla Glass can be bent at a radius of 250mm when only 0.55mm thick, enabling seamless 3D designs using cold forming technology. This process avoids optical distortion caused by uneven heat distribution during hot bending, resulting in a flawless surface. It also reduces production costs and improves yield compared to traditional methods. Corning began its automotive glass business in China in 2015, and since then, it has launched over a dozen projects globally. The company aims to strengthen relationships with both upstream and downstream partners in the automotive supply chain. On the technical side, Corning continues to innovate, developing new products to expand its market presence. Wang Jianbo mentioned that Corning provides comprehensive glass solutions, including manufacturing, surface treatments, strengthening, anti-glare, and anti-reflection technologies. In China, the company has built strong partnerships with host factories and tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers. Finally, Dr. Sun Yawei introduced the concept of “seamless three-dimensional design” and the “one black” idea to the media. In the future, highly automated cars will feature streamlined 3D designs covered entirely by Corning’s glass. The “one black” concept refers to a hidden design where the entire glass panel appears black until the car is powered on, revealing a high-definition screen. This not only enhances the visual appeal of the interior but also represents a growing trend in automotive design.
