RED Partners with Sharp to Develop 8K Display Technology
According to film photographer Phil Holland, who collaborates closely with the film studio RED, the company is partnering with Sharp to develop next-generation 8K technology. Phil has been testing an unreleased 70-inch 8K TV prototype and comparing it with Sharp’s existing 4K model using 8K aerial footage shot in Los Angeles. He notes that at the ideal viewing distance of 7 feet—based on THX standards—the difference between the two is striking, akin to the contrast between a decent print and an original masterpiece.
Although RED hasn’t officially confirmed the development, industry insiders believe this move could be a game-changer for the company. RED's Super 8 and Vista Vision sensors are already capable of 8K resolution, making them well-positioned for this shift. According to a Nikkei report, the company is also reportedly planning to partner with Foxconn to release a more affordable 8K camera in the future.
Phil highlights that the 8K prototype requires four HDMI cables and a high-quality 8K lens to fully appreciate its potential. Compared to 4K, the clarity and detail in 8K are significantly enhanced, offering a much sharper visual experience. However, he also points out that 4K content is still limited, and HD remains the dominant format in the market. As such, 8K is still far from mainstream adoption.
Experts predict that 8K will likely first gain traction in movie theaters, similar to how 4K evolved over time. Additionally, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be broadcast in 8K, which is expected to generate significant industry interest and accelerate the technology's adoption.
