At the developer conference, Ethereum is under attack

At Ethereum's developer conference Devcon2 in Shanghai, all network nodes in its system suddenly went offline, and all nodes running the Geth client were affected. This is probably an attack.

Ethereum developer and co-founder Jeffrey Wilcke subsequently issued a security warning statement on the official blog, saying that the memory of the Geth node is exhausted, and the culprit is the collapse of block 22834169. He advises users to switch to alternative clients.

Geth is a client that can run Ethereum nodes. Although it is not dominant in the Ethereum network, usage has increased dramatically in recent months. This attack may have exploited the vulnerability of the client. The attacker created a contract to activate the vulnerability and let the relevant nodes all go offline.

Without a network node, there is no way to broadcast the transaction or confirm the transfer. When running any cryptocurrency network node, it is common for the device to run out of memory. This is especially true for older or cheaper devices because the system constantly monitors and processes data. This incident made outdated hardware no longer the only reason for node memory exhaustion.

Developers soon put forward a solution and urgently updated the Geth client. Although the new version solved the problem, it still caused some losses. According to the instructions in the release, it solved a DOS attack, but this statement is too vague.

What is more worrying is the cause of the incident. Some people suspect that this is an attack by the Ethereum opponents, because today is just the first day of Devcon2, its developer conference. Other conjectures include that the attack may come from the "Bitcoin maximalist", the opponent of the cryptocurrency.

The leader and motivation of this incident is still a mystery. But there is no doubt that this incident will affect Ethereum's reputation and increase developer's doubts. Since it was published by Ethereum, it has had several problems and has had a problem with wallet private keys within the first few weeks of its release.
