Huawei and Fraunhofer IIS sign MPEG-4 audio patent license agreement
In Erlangen, Germany, Huawei and Fraunhofer IIS, a globally recognized research institute specializing in audio and media technology, have signed a global licensing agreement for the MPEG-4 audio patent portfolio. This agreement grants Huawei the right to use the patented technologies in both past and future products, reinforcing their commitment to innovation and quality in audio solutions.
Stefan Geyersberger, Deputy Director of Audio and Media Technology at Fraunhofer IIS and head of the Intellectual Property Department, expressed his satisfaction with Huawei’s decision. He stated, "We are delighted that Huawei has chosen to integrate the important and innovative MPEG-4 audio technology into its products. To date, this technology has been successfully implemented in over 10 billion devices worldwide."
As the primary developer of the MPEG-4 audio codec series, Fraunhofer IIS has played a key role in shaping modern audio standards. These codecs are widely used across communication services, broadcast television, and streaming media platforms globally. They deliver high-quality audio even at low bit rates, making them ideal for a wide range of applications, from mobile devices to professional broadcasting systems.
The adoption of open standards like MPEG-4 audio enables smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei to enhance their product offerings and expand their presence in international markets.
