GM acquires laser radar company to accelerate marketization of autonomous driving
GM has recently announced its acquisition of Strobe, a California-based laser radar (LiDAR) company, aiming to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicle technology and significantly reduce the cost of LiDAR systems. This strategic move highlights GM's commitment to advancing self-driving technology and making it more accessible in the future.
LiDAR is a critical sensor technology that enables autonomous vehicles to perceive their surroundings accurately. Strobe specializes in developing advanced LiDAR solutions that help vehicles detect nearby objects, improving safety and reliability on the road. With this acquisition, GM strengthens its position in the competitive landscape of autonomous driving, positioning itself as a strong contender against industry leaders like Waymo and Tesla.
Many automotive companies, including Google’s Waymo, Ford, and GM, rely heavily on LiDAR sensors to enhance the performance of their autonomous systems. By integrating Strobe’s technology, GM aims to speed up the commercialization of self-driving cars, making them more viable for mass production and consumer adoption.
According to Kyle Vogt, CEO of Cruise Automation—GM’s self-driving division—the acquisition will bring significant cost reductions, allowing GM to scale its autonomous vehicle efforts more efficiently. He emphasized that Strobe’s innovative approach to integrating all sensors onto a single chip could cut the cost of LiDAR systems by as much as 99%, which is a game-changer for the industry.
Strobe’s technology not only measures distance but also tracks the speed of surrounding objects, which is essential for navigating complex urban environments. Industry experts believe that the decreasing cost of sensors and the improvement in accuracy are key factors driving the feasibility of autonomous vehicles.
Although GM did not reveal the financial details of the acquisition, it confirmed that all 11 full-time employees from Strobe will join the Cruise team. This move further solidifies GM’s aggressive strategy in the autonomous driving space. In 2016, GM acquired Cruise Automation and also invested in Nauto, another self-driving startup. Recently, the number of autonomous vehicles registered in California for testing by Cruise has increased from 30-40 to over 100 in just three months.
With these developments, GM continues to take bold steps toward a future where fully autonomous vehicles become a common sight on our roads. The company remains focused on achieving its goal of launching fully self-driving cars by 2021, and this acquisition is a major step in that direction.
