GM acquires laser radar company to accelerate marketization of autonomous driving
GM recently announced its acquisition of Strobe, a California-based laser radar (LiDAR) technology company, in a strategic move to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicle systems and significantly reduce the cost of LiDAR sensors. This step is expected to strengthen GM’s position in the competitive self-driving industry, especially against major players like Alphabet (Google) and Tesla.

Strobe specializes in developing advanced LiDAR solutions that help self-driving cars perceive nearby targets effectively. Kyle Vogt, CEO of Cruise Automation — GM’s self-driving division — highlighted the importance of this deal, stating that it will drastically cut the cost of LiDAR sensors for autonomous vehicles. He noted that Strobe’s innovative system, which integrates all necessary sensors into a single chip, could reduce the cost per LiDAR unit by up to 99%. This advancement not only improves efficiency but also makes large-scale production of autonomous vehicles more viable.
In addition to cost reduction, Strobe’s technology offers enhanced accuracy in measuring both the distance and speed of objects on the road — a crucial factor in handling complex driving environments. While the exact financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, GM confirmed that Strobe’s 11 full-time employees will join the Cruise team, further boosting its technical capabilities.
This move aligns with GM’s broader strategy in autonomous driving. In 2016, the company acquired Cruise Automation and has since expanded its efforts through partnerships and investments. Recently, the number of autonomous vehicles registered in California for testing under Cruise increased from 30–40 to over 100, signaling rapid progress in real-world deployment.
