Dialogue Gao De, Vice President, Tian Mi: In the past two years, the map industry competition has returned to the technology itself.

Tian Mi is the vice president of technology of Gao De map. Three years into this company, he clearly felt that the first year and the next two years were very different. He said that in the first year of his visit, Gao De was still a listed company and he must do a lot to prove that the map can make money. After being acquired by Alibaba, the whole Ali's attitude toward Gao De was very clear. It was to put the technology in order to achieve the goal. "Ma also said last time that buying Goldder never thought that high morality would make money," he said.

After Alibaba entered Gouda in 2014, the first key decision to make was puzzling - asking Goeth to abandon his local life service, O2O, and return to basic map technology. Considering Baidu Maps, which had a larger amount of users at the time, considered O2O life services as its core strategy, the intention of this move against its largest competitor was very clear. Two years later, when Tian Mi told Lei Fengwang and colleagues that they had exchanged views, they basically reached a consensus that the map would be difficult to realize directly in the short term, and the focus of competition would return to the data and engine. Coincidentally, the two Apple executives expressed the same point of view when interviewed by Fast Company.

Two or three years ago, the entire industry believed that maps were a mature technology and welcomed the opportunity to display their talents in the era of mobile Internet. At the time, the idea of talking about maps as an entry point for local living services was very popular. But soon, map practitioners found that the original map production methods did not meet the user's needs for map data integrity, freshness, and accuracy. Thus, behind the map products that users do not see, practitioners have quietly launched new technology competitions.

Gao De felt the changes in the industry earlier because it also involved in data collection and downstream product application in the upstream of the map industry chain. In October last year, the company announced that it would conduct research and development of an integrated engine and said "This is the largest investment in R&D projects in the company's history. It is also an important battle for us to distance ourselves from our competitors in the next three years."

Recently, the company announced that the technology has been successfully developed and is on the line. Lei Fengnet took this opportunity to have a dialogue with Gaode Technology VP Tian Mi, from the interpretation of the “integration engine”, to Gao De’s technological changes in recent years, and his views on the development of the map industry.

Dialogue Gao De Technology Vice President Tian Mi

(Note: The contents of the dialogue are edited without affecting the original meaning.)

Lei Feng Network: What Gao De called "Integration Engine" refers to exactly what?

Tian Mi: It is easy to understand that the mobile phone and car version of the previous Gaode map used two engines with different architectures, one for online service and one for offline service. Now the two fuse together to become a set of engines. With or without a network, this engine provides services. Of course, it also includes maps on platforms such as browsers, which means that the entire platform becomes the same engine.

The advantage of doing so is that our user data is more convenient to transfer between different platforms. Ensure that the user can also get a continuous experience when switching between different terminals. For example, the location is sent from the PC to the mobile phone, and from the mobile phone to the car, it becomes very smooth.

Lei Feng network: You say "this is the company's history to invest in the largest R & D project", where is the main difficulty?

Tian Mi: The difficulty lies in how to put two engines together and automatically select them under different scenarios. In the online case, it can be regarded as accurate because it can be performed on the cloud server; however, the amount of local operations is very limited in offline situations. We set up a small goal to make offline results consistent with the results in the cloud.

There is a technological innovation here, which is that we synchronize some parameters and experience values accumulated in the cloud, such as the weight of each POI, the weight of each road, and the past road congestion, to the offline engine. When the user's mobile phone or car has no network connection, the offline engine can also be optimized through the data accumulated by the online engine to obtain better results. In our internal testing, offline and online results are consistent in 80% of cases. This is remarkable and it is a revolutionary change for the depot.

Lei Feng network: It seems that people are not willing to use the car navigation, in the car is also more people to use mobile navigation. Why is Gao De investing in this shrinking market?

Tian Mi: Strictly speaking, the traditional offline market is shrinking, because the experience is not good, so we are not willing to use. The data obtained by Golder here is that 10% of the new cars that were released last year are already connected to the Internet. In fact, the car has its advantages, such as it does not have to worry about power consumption like a cell phone (the mobile phone uses GPS navigation is very power-consuming), and for example, the car has more sensors, camera, laser, radar, infrared, etc. More sensors than mobile phones, and more accurate. Now we don’t conclude that the future must be dominated by mobile phones or car phones, but we hope to achieve convergence in different scenarios, such as getting off the car can seamlessly switch to the mobile phone navigation. So you need a set of engines to get through this.

We believe that the market for connected cars will soon rise. In fact, it is very interesting. It may be that two or three years ago everyone felt that the car was not working, but as the autopilot was being fired, the map navigation of the car had already begun to heat up.

Lei Fengnet: When it comes to lively autopilot and driverless driving on the market, what does Gaode do?

Tian Mi: We think that driverlessness is now in a barbarous stage. The philosophy of each family is different, and the standards are even more inconsistent. For Gaud, we don't do drones, we just do the high-precision data needed for drones. We have already won commercial orders for high-precision maps. The order came from a very large manufacturer. For the time being, the name could not be disclosed. I don’t know if you’ve seen our collection car yet. It’s very expensive. It costs nearly 10 million RMB each. You're expensive with millions of radars and other high-precision cameras and sensors inside.

Now that drones are frying so hot, we know that this is not necessarily a short-term behavior, and no matter how you do it, you must not get around the map data. So Gao De’s current strategy is very clear. I will honestly do high-precision map data. You will use my map data in the future. It's that simple.

Lei Fengwang: Another topic most talked about in the industry is artificial intelligence and big data. We noticed that Ali's companies, including Gao De, mentioned that there is a lot of big data. This may be a big problem. For you, how do these two technologies improve the map production process and enhance the map experience?

Tian Mi: We first define a basic concept. The map is a map of the physical world. In terms of technical strength, everyone is better able to respond more quickly to changes in the physical world. For Gaudí, the data was updated once every three months. It is now every day, and even some data is updated every moment. The reason why this can be done is because more than half of the data now comes from user behavior UGC data and our mining of big data. The photos collected by traditional collection vehicles are also automatically extracted from the text and road markings through the neural network-based image recognition technology. Most of them do not need manual intervention, so the overall speed has been greatly improved.

For passive UGC and big data mining, here is an example. In fact, we did not know how to use the waybill data from Taobao at the earliest. After more than half a year of research, we discovered that it can be used to verify whether there is new POI data or POI data should be updated. The user is buying a single item and then sending it to his home. He did not do anything on God, but we actually know that you are still alive. Assuming this point is a company, many parcels will be sent every day. When we find that the company's parcels are being sent to another location, it may be necessary to see if the company is moving...

Lei Feng Network: The original electricity supplier bill of lading data is so used. In your current situation, do you need more data or do you need to figure out how to use the existing data first?

Tian Mi: Both aspects are carried out at the same time. We need both more source data and cross-validation of POI data. We also need to study how to use the existing data of Gaode and the data of companies within Ali system.

Lei Fengwang: How did you assess the effect of these big data and new technologies? How do you see whether you have improved productivity or user experience?

Tian Mi: There are many ways to evaluate the effect. We can roughly divide it into three types. The first is to do our own spot checks, which is to compare our maps with the physical world to see how many fit together and whether there is any point missing the POI; the second is to compare with the competing products and the competing products have us No, we are negative points, we have him not, he is negative points, so to compare points; the third is to dig through the user's behavior, such as whether he is all the way to navigate, or total yaw, always yaw if sure It is not good, we can see the yaw rate. In fact, the ultimate evaluation is to see if there has been an increase in the number of users, and whether the user DAU has increased.

Lei Fengwang: Regarding the amount of users, we saw reports from some market research companies and recorded the data of the Apple map on the Gaode map. What kind of cooperation mode do you have with Apple?

Tian Mi: In China's maps, Apple uses Gore's data. It is responsible for developing interactive and UI layers. In fact, the difference between the experience of Apple Maps and Gold Coast maps is also reflected in the positioning services. The location service on the iPhone is made by Apple, and all other software can only call Apple's location. The Android version of the Gore map uses our own location service, so we also prefer Android phone data.

Lei Feng network: This is the difference between the iPhone and Android, the difference between the map experience of different Android phones obvious?

Tian Mi: It will become more and more obvious. Because in addition to GPS, Wi-Fi and base station data used for positioning, many sensors on the phone, such as gyroscopes, barometers are used in positioning services, we call it multi-sensor fusion positioning. In general, high-end mobile phones can use more sensor data and have higher accuracy, and low-end mobile phones are much worse. We will have better experience with Huawei's P9, Mate8 and chip-level cooperation.

Lei Feng network (search "Lei Feng network" public number attention) : In addition to the previously mentioned integration engine and the rapid response to changes in the physical world through big data mining, what are you still doing, or that we can also have a map service Which look forward to?

Tian Mi: Personalization is our goal. In fact, everyone's habit of using maps and the demand for maps are different. For example, when driving, some people are used to walking around the road and drilling to drill. Someone likes to walk along the road, and if you are slower, you can slow down. Another example is when searching for a hotel, someone may want to find a five-star hotel and someone wants to find a budget hotel. We are currently working on user portraits, learning about users' travel habits, consumption levels, and other information. Then we can provide different results and more targeted results for everyone. The technology behind these maps is actually very difficult to communicate to users. We combine the integration engine, big data mining, and personalization. We call these AI engines. The latter two are especially our long-term goals.

Last words

Before coming to Gaode, Tian Mi worked for Tencent Soso map for more than seven years. Referring to the old club, he believes that the most important issue is insufficient investment. It may be related to high-level perception of the importance of map products. For the biggest competitor Baidu, Tian Mi believes that under the pressure of commercial realisation, Baidu Maps has done a lot of O2O things. These things have not improved the user experience and even are harmful.

"Gao De is now very focused on map matters, and there is no commercial pressure, which is very important." Tian Mi finally said.

Silica Soil Casting Parts

The first process of Investment Casting production is the manufacture of investment mold, investment mold is used to form the cavity in the refractory shell model, so in order to obtain the casting with high dimensional accuracy and surface finish, the investment mold itself should have high dimensional accuracy and surface finish. In addition, the performance of the melt itself should also make the subsequent shell making process as simple as possible. In order to obtain the above high quality requirements of the investment die, in addition to good pressure (pressing the investment die), but also must choose the appropriate mold material (referred to as the mold) and reasonable mold making process.

The advantage of the investment casting method is that it can cast complex castings of various alloys, especially high temperature alloy castings. For example, the blade of jet engine, its streamlined outer profile and cooling inner cavity, with machining process almost impossible to form. Investment casting process can not only achieve mass production, ensure the consistency of castings, but also avoid the stress concentration of residual blade lines after machining.

The biggest advantage of investment casting is that because investment casting has a very high dimensional accuracy and surface finish, so it can reduce the machining work, just leave a little machining allowance in the parts requiring higher parts, and even some castings only leave grinding and polishing allowance, without mechanical processing can be used. It can be seen that the investment casting method can greatly save machine tools, processing time and metal raw materials.
