Philips and DuPont develop new materials to solve linear high voltage problems

On April 24, 2016, DuPont Performance Materials partnered with Philips Lighting to introduce a new thermal conductive resin, DuPontTM Zytel® TC, for the manufacture of LED lamp housings. The resin will be used to manufacture a universal GU10 dual-pin connector LED bulb manufactured by Philips.

DuPontTM Zytel® TC is tailored to the specific needs of LED lighting equipment and can significantly reduce the operating temperature of LED bulbs. Compared with traditional engineering plastics, the temperature drop can reach 3-10 °C, which greatly extends the life of the bulb. At the same time, the new resin has a breakdown voltage of up to 7 kV, and the electrical insulation can meet the requirements of relevant safety standards, ensuring the safety of the product during use. In addition, the new resin has excellent processability to meet the flexible design requirements while ensuring an optimal balance.

According to reports, the main challenge in developing the new resin is to achieve the optimal balance of thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of DuPontTM Zytel® flame retardant polymer, so as to achieve effective heat dissipation of the LED lamp to ensure its long service life and operation. Safety.

In addition to its performance advantages, this new resin will bring the following distinct advantages to Philips Lighting: 1) The use of new resins can eliminate the two complex and expensive processes of metal die casting and overmolding that traditional methods must pass. Up to 15%, the total cost is reduced by 30%. At the same time, it can maximize the production efficiency advantage of the injection molding process and reduce the loss of production. 2) The bulb body made of this new resin gives the surface a white ceramic natural, soft texture, which is very suitable for LED lighting. .

As a market leader in LED lighting, Philips has a global market share of approximately 12% in indoor LED lighting. Hidetoshi Saito, Head of LED Marketing at DuPont Performance Materials, said: "Through this collaboration, we have developed DuPontTM Zytel® TC, the ideal material for the Philips GU10 bulb housing. We are very proud of this. In the next few years, the lighting industry It is bound to grow strongly and play a leading role in the energy efficiency of commercial buildings, factories and residential buildings. We believe that the breakthrough with Philips will have a positive impact on the lighting industry."

According to the forecast of the US market consulting firm Winter GreenResearch, the LED lighting market will grow at a rate of 45% per year to 2020, and the total market is expected to reach $63.1 billion.
