Baidu of "All in AI" is busy letting AI products land
At the Baidu World Congress 2017, held on November 16, Baidu made a bold move by launching its first software and hardware integrated product, ravenH. This marked a significant shift for a company more accustomed to focusing on software solutions. The ravenH, priced at 1,699 yuan, was one of the most expensive smart speakers on the market at the time, signaling Baidu's serious commitment to AI-powered home devices.
Baidu Chairman and CEO Li Yanhong expressed high hopes for smart speakers in the home environment, emphasizing their potential as the ideal entry point for artificial intelligence. He highlighted that Baidu’s AI brain, known as Baidu Brain, processes over 218.8 billion requests daily, showcasing the scale and power of Baidu’s AI capabilities. According to Li, AI is now deeply embedded in people’s daily lives, and this trend is set to accelerate with the rise of AI-driven hardware and applications.
Interestingly, this wasn’t Baidu’s first foray into smart hardware. Earlier in the year, Baidu acquired Raven Technology, a leading AI hardware platform, and brought in its founder, Lu Wei, as the head of smart home hardware. The ravenH was designed in collaboration with Swedish design firm Teenage Engineering and runs on Baidu’s DuerOS 2.0 system, offering impressive performance metrics such as a 95% activation rate within five meters and a reaction speed of just 1.4 seconds.
Beyond the ravenH, Baidu also introduced other AI hardware products like ravenR and ravenQ. The ravenR is a flexible, emotionally responsive robot, while the ravenQ integrates advanced face recognition, computer vision, and Apollo autonomous driving technology, representing the pinnacle of Baidu’s AI innovation. In addition, Baidu expanded into smart home devices such as routers and sockets, further embedding AI into everyday life.
In the field of autonomous vehicles, Baidu made headlines when Li Yanhong revealed he had received a traffic ticket after riding in an unmanned car. Despite this, he saw it as a milestone in the journey toward full autonomy. Baidu announced plans to begin small-scale production of Level 4 self-driving buses by mid-2018, with broader mass production of Level 3 vehicles by 2019. These efforts were supported by the Apollo open platform, which has attracted thousands of developers and partners worldwide.
Baidu is also working on smart city initiatives, collaborating with Xiong’an and several Chinese cities to develop intelligent transportation systems. Additionally, Baidu demonstrated a fatigue detection system using facial recognition technology, designed to monitor drivers and alert them when they are tired or distracted.
At the event, Li Yanhong showcased a new voice interaction feature for mobile Baidu, allowing users to control their devices through natural speech without needing wake-up words. This innovation, set to launch in late November, represents a step toward more intuitive human-computer interactions. Li emphasized that the future of AI lies in seamless, natural conversations—without the need for commands or wake-up phrases.
