When working with shared data blocks in a programming environment, it's important to understand how to define and manage their structure. If you open a data block that is not assigned to a user-defined data type (UDT) or function block (FB), you can define its structure directly in the declaration view. However, for unshared data blocks, the declaration view is read-only and cannot be modified.

To work with a shared data block, make sure it’s not linked to any UDT or FB. If no specific view has been set, the default declaration view will appear. Use this view to input the structure of the data block based on the information provided. For unshared blocks, remember that the declaration view remains unchanged and cannot be edited.

If the data block is associated with a function block (known as a background DB), the variable declarations within the FB determine the structure of the data block. Any changes must be made directly in the function block itself. To do this, open the relevant FB, edit its variable declarations, and then recreate the instance data block. The declaration view of the instance DB will show how variables are defined within the FB.

For user-defined data types (UDTs), you can define the structure by specifying the order of variables, their data types, and initial values. If no view is set, the claim view will be displayed. You can use the TAB key or press RETURN to move between fields while entering variable details. This helps ensure clarity and consistency when building complex data structures.

When assigning a data block to a UDT, the structure of the UDT dictates the layout of the data block. Any modifications must be made in the corresponding UDT. After editing the UDT, recreate the data block, and the declaration view will reflect the updated structure. Keep in mind that the claim view is not editable, so all changes must originate from the UDT itself.

In the data view, you can only edit actual values, not the structure. To switch to the table display, use the menu command "View > Data View." Enter the required value in the "Actual Value" column, ensuring it matches the data type of the element. Invalid entries will be highlighted in red during editing, and these must be fixed before saving the block.

If needed, you can reset the data values to their initial state using the "Edit > Initialize Data Block" command. This will overwrite all current values with the predefined initial values. When saving the data block, always check for syntax errors. These will be displayed in red and must be resolved before the block can be saved successfully.

To save a data block, select "File > Save" to keep the same name or "File > Save As" to rename it. Note that system data blocks like DB0 may have restrictions on renaming. Always ensure there are no errors in the block before saving, as this ensures the integrity of your program and data.
