What is the first thing you think about the classification of the camera?

What do you think of first when you talk about the classification of the camera? Brand? Pixel? colour?

That's right, the camera is a collection of many attributes that cannot be categorized separately, and what we have to do is to fully understand it like an interview before deciding to choose.

There are probably thousands of cameras on the market, but I never panic, and I am not afraid that new products will not keep up. The secret is that I have summarized the 10 control points for camera selection, and I will do more with less.

01. Camera brand

Although most manufacturers have launched a full range of products, but each brand has a good place, the star products of the brand are often cost-effective and reliable.

How do you know which one is a star product? Ask your camera supplier.

02. Resolution

Resolution English is Resolution, which refers to the number of pixels contained in the image sensor, usually expressed in length * width. We often say how many megapixel cameras are calculated from resolution.

For example, the resolution is 1280pixel*1024pixel, 1280*1024=1, 310,720, which is a 1.3 megapixel camera.

The resolution determines the accuracy that the machine vision system can achieve in a certain sense. The accuracy of how to calculate it will be explained in a later article.

03. Shutter

Shutter English is Shutter, which is the device used to control the illumination time of the photosensitive element in the camera.

There are two types of shutters commonly used in industrial cameras: Global Shutter and Rolling Shutter.

The point is that if you need dynamic image capture (flying), please select the global shutter, the rolling shutter can only be used for static image capture.

04. Frame rate

The frame rate in English is Frames Per Second, which is the number of frames per second.

For example, 30 fps, it can be calculated that the time required to theoretically acquire a picture is 1000 ms/30 fps=33.3 ms, which is counted in the overall detection beat.

05. Image sensor

The image sensor is a photosensitive element in the camera that converts optical images into electronic signals, mainly divided into CCD and CMOS.

One of the top ten questions I have been asked most often is CCD or CMOS?

This should start from their history. The image quality of the original CCD is obviously better than CMOS. However, CMOS has worked hard. After several years of development, the same imaging quality of CCD has been achieved and the manufacturing cost is lower. In March of this year, SONY has withdrawn. The CCD market specializes in CMOS, so the future must belong to CMOS.

What do we need to know about image sensors?

What we need to know is the size of the chip, which will be used when selecting the lens.

The structure of the chip, which determines whether the camera is a line camera or an area camera.

The model of the chip is also crucial, and the good chip camera image quality is good.

How to tell? First ask the mother to look at the evaluation, and then ask the supplier price, in general, the same quality camera price is comparable, in the current hardware transparent market is basically a price.

06. Interface connecting the lens

The camera's interface is used to connect the camera to the lens. There are mainly C, CS and F ports.

You can choose the matching lens interface. You must consider this problem when selecting the model. If the interface is different, add the adapter ring.

07. Transmission interface

The transmission interface refers to the way the camera transmits pictures. Currently, GigE, USB3.0, CameraLink, etc. are commonly used, and the interface will affect the acquisition speed.

Need to pay attention to the selection of accessories:

(1) Select the same image capture card as the interface, GigE is equipped with Gigabit network card, and CameraLink is equipped with CameraLink card.

(2) Connected cables, the interfaces should be matched, and the length should be determined. If you need to take the tank chain, you must have a flexible and bend-resistant cable, and you must have a screw lock on the interface to avoid long-term drop or poor contact.

08. Camera color

The camera is divided into a color camera and a black and white camera. Usually, the color camera is selected only when it is necessary to recognize the color, and the black and white camera is always selected at other times.

Because many visual tools are processed on black and white images, if you choose a color camera, you need to convert it into a black and white image and then calculate it. This process tends to reduce the quality of the image. It is better to choose a black and white camera from the beginning.

09. Camera dimension

According to the dimension camera can be divided into 2D camera and 3D camera, 3D camera can get height information, other situations can be solved with 2D camera, this article is also mainly about 2D camera, 3D camera will be specifically mentioned later.

10. Camera system

There are two types of camera systems: smart camera systems (embedded systems) and PC-Based systems.

The smart camera system collects images and processes the images in one, which is compact, easy to use and slightly more expensive.

The PC-Based system captures images with an industrial camera, and the PC processes the images. It can simultaneously integrate multiple cameras into one vision system, and can develop custom software for the second time.

In terms of cost performance, if it is a single camera with a demand of less than 2 million pixels, it is recommended to choose a smart camera. If it is a multi-camera or a single camera with a price of more than 2 million pixels, it is recommended to select the PC-Based system.

Choose the camera from the above 10 control points, everything is under your control, and dare not say that it is enough to help you solve most of the camera selection problems.
