ABB signs contract with Kenya Power & Lighting

ZURICH, Switzerland, August 30 - ABB signed a $25 million contract with Kenya Electric Power and Lighting Corporation (KPLC) to upgrade and expand the latter to control Kenya's transmission network and distribution in the capital city of Nairobi Electrical network system.
ABB has provided the original SCADA/EMS system (monitoring and data acquisition/power management system) twenty years ago and has been a major supplier of power communication equipment for Kenyan power and lighting companies for the past 30 years.
Peter Leupp, Head of Power Systems at ABB, said: "We are pleased to continue working with Kenya's power and lighting companies to improve the quality, reliability and safety of Kenya's electricity supply."
The control system will include five control centers in Nairobi and across the country, with redundant computer systems and ABB Network Manager SCADA/EMS software for power grid operation, control, analysis and improvement, and power generation management. To ensure reliable operation of the control system, these centers will link to more than 90 substations and power stations through more than 1,300 kilometers of fiber composite ground wire, ABBFOX515 multiplexer, ABBETL600 digital power line carrier (DPLC) and radio communication.
Some of the tasks that the control system will be responsible for are maintaining power delivery during morning load increases, maintaining safety margins during peak daily hours, and managing night load reductions. In the case of unplanned interference, it is important to be prepared to avoid large-scale power outages, to quickly analyze and re-establish power supply.
Over the past 40 years, ABB has been selected by many of the world's most challenging power management projects, delivering hundreds of installations.
ABB is a global leader in power and automation technology, providing solutions to customers in the industrial and power industries to help customers increase productivity while reducing environmental impact.
