Nokia's acquisition of Here Maps will provide car location services in the future

According to foreign media reports, Intel confirmed this week that it has acquired a 15% stake in the Here map service. Intel will use the Here map to develop an automated positioning system.

Nokia acquires map of Here, car positioning service will be provided in the future

Here used to belong to Nokia, and in 2015 it was sold to a consortium of automakers Audi, BMW and Daimler for about 2.5 billion euros. Intel did not disclose the price of the deal, and the transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017. Based on the 2015 selling price, the price of the deal was $390 million.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said: "Automobiles are fast becoming the smartest and most interconnected devices in the world. We look forward to working with Here and its automotive partners to provide an important technical foundation for future smart connected cars. ”

Here CEO Edzard Overbeek said: “For autonomous driving, real-time, self-healing, high-definition display in the real world is critical. Achieving this goal requires a more powerful in-vehicle computing platform. Leading chip makers, Intel will help accelerate Here's mission in this area to support a versatile, real-time digital location platform that covers automotive, cloud computing and all other connected devices."

Here is also currently working closely with Microsoft. Microsoft acquired another part of Nokia's business and extended the licensing agreement for location data in the transaction.

This is not Intel's first investment in the automotive industry. For Intel, the car is an important area, and Intel needs to occupy a place in this industry. At this week's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the automotive industry is expected to attract close attention.

Intel's other initiatives in the automotive industry include the acquisition of Itseez and Yogitech to enhance the safety and navigation of autonomous vehicles; investing at least $250 million in the industry; actively participating in major auto shows; and setting up a dedicated autopilot technology in November this year group. (The group's head, Doug Daivs, will join the Here board.)

Through its investment in Here, Intel plans to design and demonstrate an architecture for proof of concept to optimize driving safety and predictability. Part of the job is to improve the accuracy of the Here map data. Currently, positioning can be accurate to meters, and the future HD map technology goal is accurate to centimeters. For autonomous cars, location data needs to be updated in real time and more accurately.
