ON Semiconductor Introduces Tunable RF Components for Smaller Smartphones

End-user demand for smaller, slimmer phones gives designers the challenge of reducing antenna size without compromising performance. At the same time, the rapid rise in mobile data demand has led operators around the world to increase the number of bands that smartphones must cover. The performance of ON Semiconductor's new TCP-30xx family of low insertion loss passive tunable integrated circuits (PTIC) and TCC-103 PTIC controller ICs can be tuned and optimized to reduce antenna size and increase frequency range. Help overcome head effect and hand effect problems.

The TCP-30xx PTIC series offers a 4:1 tuning range and capacitance values from 1.2 picofarads (pF) to 8.2 pF. It is available in WLCSP and QFN type packages and can be used to replace traditional "fixed band matching" devices. ON Semiconductor's PTIC can also use smart phone power amplifiers more energy-efficiently to reduce current consumption and help extend battery life. The data rate in the edge coverage area can be increased by a factor of 3 due to a significant reduction in dropped or missed calls.

ON Semiconductor also offers a new PTIC control IC that works in conjunction with PTIC. The TCC-103 is a high voltage digital to analog IC that provides control and bias in a tunable solution that is fully compliant with cellular mobile timing requirements and other wireless systems. This low-power IC features an integrated boost converter with 3 programmable outputs (up to 24 V) and an interface to independently control multiple tuning components through a single MIPI/SPI bus component. The device is packaged in a WLCSP and can be supplied separately or integrated into the module.

ON Semiconductor's expertise and technology in TRFC has been recognized, as evidenced by the shipment of more than 10 million TRFC components. The company also has a field application team around the world to assist customers in design and provide design tools to help accelerate and simplify antenna circuit optimization.

David Laks, director of TRFC product line at ON Semiconductor, said: "The smartphone market has many design challenges because end users are eager for smaller, thinner and faster phones. These phones require smaller antennas but must be reliable. Working and processing an increasing amount of data. ON Semiconductor's tunable RF components provide an excellent solution to help smartphone hardware designers meet the specific and diverse antenna performance specifications of operators deploying 3G and 4G LTE networks."

Packaging and price

These PTICs are available in WLCSP and QFN packages and are priced at $0.50 each in quantities greater than 250,000.
