In 2016, Bowman established Bowman Additive Production, a specialized additive manufacturing division that provides industrial bearing users with customized bearing design, prototyping, testing, inspection, and production services.

The application of 3D printing technology has enabled Bowan to enhance the ability to produce small batches of bearings quickly and to provide Bowan with more room to optimize the performance and longevity of some of its bearing products.

To date, Bowman Additive Production is equipped with two additive manufacturing equipment, one is EOS's selective laser sintering equipment, the other is HP's multi-jet melting equipment (MJF), and Bowman uses nylon 11 as the printing material.

How do bearing manufacturers apply 3D printing technology in production?

The first product developed by Bowman using 3D printing technology is a plastic bearing cage. The application of 3D printing technology enables Bowman to produce plastic bearing cages without the need for injection molds. This not only enables Bowman to respond quickly to product design changes, but also enhances the competitiveness of fast-production small and medium-volume custom bearings.

With 3D printing technology, Bowman has optimized the cage design and integrated many complex structures in the cage. 3D printing equipment can economically produce this complex design.

When designing a 3D print cage, Bowman used an interlocking structure with the rolling elements holding each part of the cage together. The advantage of this design is that it gives more space around the circumference of the cage, so this holder can add 2-4 rolling elements compared to similar products on the market. This means that the bearing load can be distributed over a larger number of rolling bodies.

According to Bowman, the 3D printed bearing cage with this design increases the load bearing capacity of the split bearing by 70% and the working life to 500%. Bowman can increase bearing load and life without changing the design of other components in the bearing.
