Intel: 5G "multiplication effect" promotes economic growth

Editor's Note: On June 28th, the 2017 World Mobile Congress (MWCS 2017) opened in Shanghai. 5G is one of the most important topics in this conference. To this end, Intel University of Science and Technology, Communications and Equipment Division wireless standards chief technical expert Wu Geng wrote an article, expounding Intel's understanding of the following 5G core topics: What is 5G, what 5G will change, what kind of industrial transformation will 5G bring? And economic and social impact. The following is the full text:

In 2020, there will be 50 billion smart devices connected through networks, from wearable devices and robots to smart homes, smart cities, connected factories, and so on. These smart devices will generate 20 billion times more data than the number of Galaxy stars, and they are calling for the arrival of the next generation wireless communication network, 5G.

5G≠4G+1G

When it comes to 5G, the first thing people think of is that 5G will be faster and have higher bandwidth than 4G. But 5G is not just about adding 1G to 4G, it will also bring high reliability and low latency, so that driverless cars can get information about the surrounding environment in near real-time like the sixth sense. The biggest difference between 5G and 4G is that 5G enables intelligent everything to be interconnected, enabling mutual communication between large-scale machines. Intel expects that by 2020, 5G will need to connect 50 billion smart devices and 7.7 billion people.

In order to implement these 5G functions, the network has begun to fully transform to ensure that the future network is flexible, programmable and dynamically manageable. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Network (SDN) are the foundations of which are actually solving communication problems with computing. At the same time, Intel saw that Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) is also becoming the driving force of network transformation, sinking the core functions of the network to the edge of the network, and adding functions such as computing and storage on the wireless network side to meet the 5G low time. Extended, high bandwidth business needs.

In the future, the network will continue to evolve and solve computing problems through communication. For the first time, 5G will truly transfer valuable information processed by Smart Cloud and Cloud to the smart device. By then, the application level of mobile phones and computers will no longer be limited by the configuration of the device itself, but can take advantage of the more powerful processing power of the cloud. These new 5G applications, including industrial control and driverless, will also benefit from the multiplicative effects of computing and communication.

Therefore, Intel believes that 5G requires the convergence of communication and computing, solves communication problems with computing, and solves computational problems with communication to support the interconnection of massive devices and the transmission and processing of massive data. 5G is not only about mobile phones and computers, but also about forward-looking applications such as driverless, virtual reality, smart home, and smart city. It is not only an evolution of communication technology, but also has a broader ecosystem than the wireless communications industry.

5G brings business opportunities to all walks of life, driving economic growth

Based on this understanding, in Intel's view, 5G is a new starting point, an industrial revolution that integrates wireless connectivity, computing and cloud, and will meet our expectations for the entire industry upgrade. 5G will bring cloud business opportunities to the wireless field and major vertical industries, bringing the multiplication effect of “communication X computing X vertical industry”, empowering and multiplying economic development. It will also bring huge environmental and social benefits, allowing users to enjoy an unprecedented experience.

The growing maturity of 5G will help driverless cars make breakthroughs in the next 3-5 years. It enables driverless cars to use cloud-based artificial intelligence and data and “communicate” with real-time traffic infrastructure such as other cars and street lights on the road. This will improve traffic congestion and result in a safer, more efficient and more relaxed driving experience. The combination of electric vehicles and shared driverless vehicles will greatly reduce carbon emissions, which has important environmental and social significance. The Chinese government is actively accelerating the deployment of zero-emission and driverless vehicles.

The city consumes two-thirds of the world's energy and most other resources. 5G can connect hundreds of millions of IoT devices, making smart cities a reality, which will bring the environment (energy efficiency, air quality, clean water) and society. Benefits (emergency response to drones, safety of urban structures). China is planning more than 285 smart city projects to improve and improve the quality of life of citizens.

5G will also release the “power of the game” in the game industry, making the e-sports “unstable factor” network delay a thing of the past; making the game characters in augmented reality more intelligent and agile; introducing the powerful computing power of cloud computing Virtual reality reduces the cost burden of virtual reality games for avid game fans.

5G brings more changes than this, smart home will be realized, refrigerator can also help you online shopping; "24-hour precision medical treatment" is expected to become a reality, that is, complete within 24 hours including gene sequence detection, data analysis, disease diagnosis, and Develop personalized treatment plans, etc.; support drones to replace humans to complete high-risk engineering inspections such as oil rigs and wind turbines...

5G is bringing humanity to a wider world. Only by placing 5G in a larger industrial and technological landscape can it achieve its economic and social benefits. Here, 5G needs the synergy of all parties in the industry, and Intel has unique positioning and advantages. Intel is the only company that offers 5G end-to-end (from smart devices, wireless technologies, to networking and cloud) solutions. At the same time, the breadth and depth of cross-industry cooperation experience over the years has also made Intel a smart road to promote the convergence of communications computing and major vertical industries. We hope to work with all parties to accelerate the arrival of the 5G era.
