Way of working

Flyback converters using LinkSwitch-LP have an output VI characteristic similar to an unregulated power transformer power supply, but their output current is limited so that they do not exceed the maximum rated output power (peak power point).

When the power supply is loaded from no load to a peak power point of 2 W, the LNK564PN (U1) uses the current flowing into the feedback pin (FB) to perform a "drop" switching cycle to adjust the output voltage. At the peak power point, the supply provides more than 300 mA of load current at voltages above 5.7 V.

When the load exceeds the peak power point, the power loss cycle operation stops. U1 limits the output current of the power supply by lowering its oscillation frequency (switching frequency of the MOSFET). At this time, the voltage of the FB pin is also reduced accordingly. If the load change causes the FB pin voltage to fall below the auto-restart voltage threshold VFB(AR) of 0.8 V (when the power supply output is 1 to 1.5 V) and the duration is greater than 100 ms, the IC enters the auto-restart mode of operation. The MOSFET switch operates for 100 ms every 800 ms until the FB pin voltage is above 0.8 V.

Due to the frequency modulation function of the U1 internal oscillator and the E-Shield shielding technology used in the transformer T1, it is sufficient to use the LC filter consisting of L1 and C1 for the conducted EMI attenuation of the power supply. Inductor L1 not only has the function of differential mode EMI suppression, but also functions as a fuse. The Filterfuse is to be wrapped with a heat-shrinkable tube, and the winding wire diameter is appropriate so that any component in the power supply can be disconnected like a fuse when it is damaged. Due to the tight current limit tolerance range of the LinkSwitch-LP series and the transformer winding technology in T1, the primary winding achieves a clampless circuit design. Its peak drain voltage does not approach the drain-source breakdown voltage (BVDSS) of U1.
